Stupid mistake - valve stem

At the risk of shame from my mistake, I put this out there to help others avoid my trouble.  I noticed my rear tire had no cap on the valve stem the other day, so I got one out of my tool box and put it on.  Next day on the highway I noticed the bike wouldn't move when I went to change lanes and realized my back tire was going flat.  Once I was able to inspect it, I saw that the valve stem cap was deformed and saw where it was hitting the caliper.  The stupid cap was about 2 or 3 millimeters too tall and this interference broke the stem.  Just a word of caution to you fellow VFR owners!

I had the same problem several years ago. The top of the cover was hitting the caliper every rotation and the air pressure slowly dropped until I figured it out. I think next time I get tires on gonna ask for angle valve stems.

Yep. Had it once. New rear tire fitted and was not informed they replaced the valve stem, there was nothing wrong with the original anyway!

Fitted the wheel, went for a test ride and faintly heard a tick tick sound. Had to drop the wheel off, then back to the tire place for the shorter stem to be fitted, very annoying.

So YES a very good Warning, something to be aware of when getting a new rear tire.

Yes, particularly because fitting the wrong valve stem can result in rapid deflation of the tire--not something you want happening on the motorway,

Speaking of angled valve stems, are there any drawbacks to having those on the back wheel?

I've had angled valve stems for a long time. Never an issue and they've held air pressure well. I do use metal caps and high quality valve inserts.
