Member Contributer 5thave Posted December 26, 2019 Member Contributer Share Posted December 26, 2019 Okay, I've been MIA for a while. Back in May 2018 I was working on the bike: I've finally gotten around to putting a few hours into the project again. This may be a long-term project. But today, with a little help from a friend we got the engine out and onto a workbench. For what it's worth, the low (near zero!) compression in one cylinder is a mystery. I expected to find a bent valve or damaged valve spring. Nope. The head is 100% fine. All valve clearances were within spec before we started, and there is no visible damage to the piston crowns or cylinder walls. I will have to invert the engine and disassemble it to find whether piston rings are the problem. I expect that must be the case.

Member Contributer 5thave Posted January 2, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted January 2, 2020 What is a good source for engine gasket kits, upper and lower?
Member Contributer Mohawk Posted January 2, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted January 2, 2020 Athena make good gasket sets for most models, much cheaper than OEM.
Member Contributer FromMaine Posted January 3, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted January 3, 2020 Athena do make good kits. I talked with their rep at the Motorcycle show in Milan about 4 years ago, and he told me they have an office in the USA. http://www.athenausa.com/catalog/motorcycle If they cannot help, try these guys. I bought a VF1000R kit from them at a very good price. https://www.ebay.de/itm/KR-Motorcycle-engine-TOP-END-Gasket-Kit-ATHENA-HONDA-VFR-750-R-RC30-88-93-/172397945569?hash=item2823b7e2e1 They call themselves ItalyRacing (199750 reviews, 100% satisfaction) They communicate with you in German, and the kits ships from Poland, where I assume its produced. I was very happy. Notice its says Athena, mine said KR. I think the factory in Poland builds the kits for Athena. Vesrah are good also. Dennis Kirk in the US carry them and they are found on E-Bay http://www.vesrah.tokyo/product-line/gaskets/ Discounthonda who carry oem parts show parts #'s for the kits but the kits are not available. The individual parts are though at huge cost when added up. https://www.discounthondaparts.com/oemparts/a/hon/506ca710f870023420a3fb70/gasket-kit-a

Member Contributer FromMaine Posted January 4, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted January 4, 2020 Just a note, Dennis Kirk carries Vesrah products, including gaskets but don't stock the VFR750 Gasket kit, it would probably have to be ordered. The part # is VG-5149-M.

Check out GPbikes ( https://gpbikes.com/ ) I have been dealing with them for years with my Triumph and they recently became a Honda dealer and service center with online parts ordering. They are located in Ontario. Massive dealership and free shipping on orders over I think $50. Look forward to seeing the progress
