Dash/instrument cluster not working

Nikolaus

Recommended Posts

Today i took out the battery, following the instructions from the manual. However when i placed it back in place and connected the poles the dash wasnt working!

I can see the "N" green lamp, indicators, light beam (blue symbol).

However speed, gear, fuel, rev counter is all dead.

Checked all fuses and no issues here.

Any suggestions?

Does your bike run ok apart from the indications you listed not working?

Is there any chance you connected the battery reverse polarity?

You absolutely had the ignition to OFF while removing and reconnecting the battery?

Appears to me given the various indications not working that the internals of the instrument panel are damaged. Suggest you might have to take it to the nearest Honda motorcycle specialist.

Maybe try disconnecting battery power again for say 10mins and reconnecting just to see if things reset - not hopeful though.

Good Luck. Keep us informed on how you go.

Thanks for your reply!

Yes the bike works just fine apart from the dash. I drove it to my local dealer and they will have a look at it.

Im sure i reconnected the battery in correct order. Also the ignition was off because the keys was on the "trunk".

I have a theory that while i was taking out the battery the cable(s) was stuck on the edge of they battery so i was pulling slightly on them. Maybe causing a cable to disconnect or something..

I will keep you posted!

However lets say that something is broken. Would the 5 year warranty cover this or do i need to pay for it?

At Ignition switch ON, do all the Instrument Panel LCD Segments Test/Display correctly? And, does the Tacho Indicator go through a full sweep of the dial? Is your Clock displaying and with correct time?

Accutally the LCD screen(s) are completly dead. Also the Tacho indicator stays at 0rpm. The Neutral green light on the tacho indicator works fine however.

Indicator arrows which are outside the lcd screen works.

I hate to say it but if the Instrument Display doesn't even get beyond its own self test, and the fact that various info from various sources are not displayed then I think your Instrument Panel is shot!

The Tacho is driven from the ECM, Gear Display and Oil Pressure Light is Serial Data from the ECM, Speed is from the rear wheel ABS rotor then the ABS controller to the display, Fuel Gauge is independently supplied from the level sensor. The fact you have no issues riding the bike all point to the one common issue the Panel itself!

Also the Panel still has power directly to it even with the Ignition to OFF for the Clock, so any zapping to frame of the battery positive could possibly adversely kick back into the Instrument Panel.

Haven't heard of any other 8gen owner to have had this issue!

Please keep us informed as to what Honda say or do, good luck, but it sounds like an expensive repair!

Out of interest. Do both left and right LED Position Lights (the Lights on your mirrors) work when you turn on your ignition? This will just confirm switched Instrument Panel power is good.

You also said the Neutral LED works, this is +12v seeking, and the Indicator Arrow LED's work, they are -ground seeking. So that basically confirms your power and ground are good at the Instrument Panel. Still looking like an internal fault with the panel.

If you check out the wiring diagram & provide an appropriate hot tap power supply to the board ( I'm not sure if its 12 or 5volts) then you should br able to prove if its the display or the circuit that supplies it. If no joy there then its likely fried 😞

If you do get life, then its the circuits, you can trace the track fault & bypass it with a soldered wire.
