800F/X Ignition Key

A m8 of mine owns a 2015 VFR800X Crossrunner, a bike based around and has lots of compatibility with the VFR800F 2014+ model 8th Gen.

He's lost one of his 2 ignition keys.

Honda UK have been unable to source a replacement key which works and he is now left with only the one key. They are unable to replicate the cut to allow it to fit the lock.

Even if a working replacement key could be sourced overseas, the bike is needed to code the transponder so I'm figuring only UK or near-continental Europe solutions are workable so if any members know of anyone who has successfully had a key cut for the new gen bikes, please let me know.

Oh, and 8th Gen/Crossrunner owners, make sure you hang on to that spare key otherwise it could be very, very expensive (ignition lock, seat lock, ECU...…)

Hi Skids.

Thats unbelievable that Honda UK can't help him out. I just recently almost had the need to purchase a new blank key. I had made inquires at my local dealership and they had the correct blank key in stock if I needed it.

The 8gen Owners Manual states - "To make a duplicate key and register it with you HISS System, take the spare key, the key tag, and the motorcycle to your dealer"

Has he still got the Key Tag with the key number? I think this is simply a cutting code identifier, Honda could cut the key based on this code if you didn't supply them the spare key. There are specialists Locksmiths out there that can copy the cut of a Wave Key as well as having access to the Honda database to cut a key based on the Key Tag number.

Also the key registering process is probably the same as the 8gen which is also the same as the 6gen. Attached is the 8gen procedure.

He just needs a correct blank, have Honda or a locksmith cut it to match the original, then have Honda or himself go through the registration process of key to the ECM.

Cheers.

Hi Skids, unless they have changed the keys significantly then you just need a blank & most key cutters can cut the pattern. Likewise unless they have changed how HISS works, you can program spare keys on the bike from the primary keys. In fact you don’t even need a Honda chip key, you can buy the chips separately and insert I a blank key.

I think his issue is getting one of the new style keys cut. Honda have tried several times and failed. It's not the coding, it's the physical key itself; they just don't fit.

Here's a quote from him:

I do have the barcode label, it has Alpha character and 3 digit number too so as Grum says I expected to be able to order a new key using that, hence the exchanges with Honda UK.  I also thought it could provide the pattern code to a locksmith.  The problem has been that I can't find a locksmith with a cnc cutter that can use either the barcode or alphanumeric.

Things used to be so much easier in past and not at near £70 a key blank to find out :023: .

It could be that the Honda uk people didn't have a knowledgeable person handling my case, but they asked for vin numbers and allegedly contacted the euro center but didn't come back with place that I could go with the blank and said they could not provide a precut key. :027:

Just hoping somebody else out there has had success in the uk.

This issue has finally been sorted. It appears the Honda dealer (and several other Honda dealers by the sounds of it) did not realise that Honda do supply replacement keys which are then HISS coded as above.

Thanks for the inputs guys.

Well I'm surprised at that, considering the number of bikes with wave keys and the HISS system that some dealerships didn't know they could supply a key!!!!

Glad it's all sorted Skids.

Cheers.
