Member Contributer CHUCK2 Posted July 14, 2018 Member Contributer Share Posted July 14, 2018 I wonder...why would a lead acid type(AGM) battery charger not be ok to use with a lithium battery since both types get charged the same while installed in the bike. thepretender
From the Shorai website. "While standard lead-acid chargers can be used with Shorai LFX when needed, the BMS01 is specifically designed to charge, store, maintain, balance, and diagnose your LFX battery. " They can be used. SEBSPEED
I picked up an Optimate for shelf charging purposes.
Member Contributer adkfinn Posted July 14, 2018 Member Contributer Share Posted July 14, 2018 Short story: "Li-ion cannot absorb overcharge. When fully charged, the charge current must be cut off. A continuous trickle charge would cause plating of metallic lithium and compromise safety. To minimize stress, keep the lithium-ion battery at the peak cut-off as short as possible." I think this is one of a few reasons regular charges shouldn't be used on lithium batteries. From here - http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries I use this cheap Battery Tender model: http://products.batterytender.com/Chargers/PN-021-0199-DL-WH.html It auto detects (you can switch modes manually also) and seems to work well.
