130 is merging speed to get on the freeway in the city of Los Angeles.    No I was supposed to have surgery a year ago but was put off due to Covid, busy at work etc.  Started having some epic pain and finally  got an mri which showed a lesion, basically a spot on my talus (ankle bone) was worn out into the marrow….I have flat feet and deformed ankles long story short as a nurse I’m finally sitting my butt down for the next few months and get to watch the pandemic on CNN.    Had to pick up a few screws to realign the ankle and a whole host of things thus the no weight bearing for a few months……

So, still waiting for 3 vtec valve buckets ex Japan so the bike is still in bits on the lift, I’ve been wanting a top box carrier for a while as I’m using the bike to commute during the summer months and the ones in all the usual places (fleabay) et al are all to expensive, so I welded up my own design in the garage from scrap I had loafing around. Great skills and looks great but beware, I bought a carrier similar in design to that and it snapped. I was cornering at something approaching a very high speed and it spilled the contents of my top box, and my top box, all over the road.

This had tubing. Clean break on both arms. 

 

I guess I put too much weight in the top box.

Fitted a nice Ti Rear brake lever clevis with Ti pin an nut. Saved 20grams & goes well with my PSR M/C Reservoir 👍

I had my wheels removed from '14 VFR and powder coated them pearl white to match my VFR.

They look stunning off the bike.

Awaiting my newly Powder coated wheels is a brand new set of Michelin Road 5s.

The set I had on I sold for $200 Canadian. 50% tread left. Not bad.

Will post pics once mounted on the bike.

Fitted my TomTom satnav to the bike yesterday. Fortunately, there was already a power feed installed so just had to change the connector. Win! 
Just need to fit the rad guard when it arrives.

Hopefully will get some decent time out on the thing after only doing 4K miles since 2018 on my previous bike, a ZZR1400

A sunny weekend got me motivated to pull the cover off the VFR and dust it off. Checked the air filter - getting dirty enough to replace but not crammed full of rodent refuse, thank goodness. As an aside, the Honda engineer who designed the 6th gen's fuel tank could spent a little more time and made it tip back far enough to get in and change the air filter without fear of amputation.

 

Installed the *new* battery I got in Delta, Colorado back in 2015. It’s the one I use riding around near home. For long trips I install the oe Yuasa because it seems to better hold a charge. Lots more deferred mtce to come in preparation for riding season: chain, tires, repaint wheels, etc. Time will tell just much work this A1 procrastinator completes 😉

Finally after 7 years 😳 I did the flapper and snorkel mod. Can’t even tell you why, just something to try. Can always change it back. Heading out for a ride in the morning to see how it sounds/feels. I believe it only sounds different, no real change to performance.

Hi Phil.

Be interested in knowing how it goes.

5 years ago I only removed all the Flapper hardware to free up some under tank space and Only because Honda had removed this system from later 8gens. I've noticed absolutely no degradation in performance or fuel economy after some 40,000k since removal.

 

As for the Snorkel mod, I tried this on my 6gen, a waste of time, just makes air intake louder.

After 200km this morning I agree, I couldn’t feel any difference at all (wasn’t expecting to though) while the intake/engine noise is louder it isn’t annoying, just sounds a bit deeper. I will leave the snorkel off for now and see how I feel about it in a few weeks time. It was considerably cooler on the ride this morning (the weather not the bike) a very welcome change after the last few weeks. 
Good news is that the job share I applied for 16 months ago has finally been approved and implemented. I will now be doing two weeks on two weeks off so I should get a lot more riding in. First two weeks off starts at the end of the month 🥳

Finally got the "last" extenders from Belarus yesterday and installed them. I need to reset sag and then test them. Quality is good. More pics/details in the 1998 to 2000 conversion (not so much happening now!) thread.

Installed the Givi Wingrack for an upcoming camping trip. Took a lot of muscle to get this to fit, bolts and washer combos, either the rear subframe is crooked or the rack is, because the gap between the rack and fairing on the left-hand side was non existent and rubbing on the paint. Got a new key cut so i can remove the rear seat with the rack installed.

Finally went the bike with some plastic and metal restorer (do it once a year now and it makes a huge difference, oil-based but leaves absolutely no residue) Love this product and can highly recommend Owatrol Polytrol

Cleaned, lubed and adjusted the chain which now has 40,500km on it (original chain) I think it is finally giving in, I noticed a couple of O rings that are starting to fail. Still I’m pretty happy with its mileage. Just starting to wear on the rear sprocket, front will of course be worse so will replace both.

Did the same to my chain a week ago.  It has 28,500 miles on it now and not making any noise yet.  I could only get 20K mile on my old 84 FJ1100 with the more power and weight shortening its life.

 

I looked back on my service logs and I remove, clean, oil and replace about every 1,000 mile with drops of motor oil at the rollers every 300 miles or so.

Hi Phil. Are you looking at doing the chain replacement yourself? For info 

Yamaha World in S.A. Have the Gold/Black D.I.D.525VX3 124 link chain for $144.99 delivered, a great chain but you will need to cut off links to get the chain to 110 links inclusive of the master link.

Thanks for that Grum, I won’t be doing it myself but I use an ex Honda mechanic who will be happy for me to supply the chain and sprockets, and the best part is he charges very reasonable rates AND is happy for me to watch and learn. Great bloke whose (nick) name is Grub.
