Rear Brake Hanger 4th and 5th gen

checking if there is any interest in custom rear brake hangers for 4th and 5th gen's. On 4th gen it's pretty much just cool, maybe save afew pounds, but on 5th gen it will make DeLink way easier. 

The hangers are made to use Brembo 84mm calipers, which are relatively cheap. Also good for the Beringer Mini ($$$). Possibly over slung, but primarily under.

Price would be dependent on how many we can get to commit. 150-200 is my guess.

This is NOT a performance mod, i had no issues with the stock rear brake. I just like cool stuff.

 

The hanger is for using a Brembo side outlet p32 or p34 rear caliper, the top outlet version just barely hits the valve stem and spokes (less than 1mm). Many Ducati's and Aprillia's, etc, use them, so they are plentiful on Ebay.  Also suitable for the Beringer and ISR if you have deep pockets. You will also need a new brake line since the caliper is Underslung. This is for the stock rotor size, of which there are Chinese versions that drop 1 pound. Works fine with stock MC. The Beringer may not enable locking it up as it is tiny, works fine for light duty applications.

 

Kit comes with Stainless fasteners, and is a work of art.

My interest has been for the 5th gen; will they be essentially the same? Or is a top side option a possibility?

Yes, which means removing the caliper may be required for bleeding. I have never had issues on the vfr, nc30, or Hawk GT with underslung.

 

5th gen came underslung, and i doubt there would be sufficient interest to run overs, but you never know... They will hopefully be finalized shortly....

Clocking the 5th gen at 8ish o'clock puts the bleeder at the top :)

Agreed, but the caliper is always where it's at be that 12, 6, 8, 5, etc....

Is this hanger suitable for those doing a Ducati 1098/1198/848 rear wheel conversion? I believe those bikes have the same rear calliper.

They are made for use on the Honda eccentric. So if the conversion doesn't change the eccentric, maybe. I do not know if it would fit a Ducati eccentric. Ducati uses a smaller rotor, so it would require a stock Honda rotor as well....

LOL :)  Sadly, after having no one actually wanting a 4th gen(paying for one), my machinist decided to move on to other things that would actually help him pay the bills 😞

 

All the banter about "Top Mount", "Stock Caliper", and various wheel fitment which could not be confirmed or guaranteed, it just seemed unfeasible.

 

It is an item that adds no HP, only looks, and incurs the cost of a caliper and probably brake line as well. i understand most don't care to spend the $$'s on "Bling", and the loss of a couple pounds of weight.

 

Most custom parts made for old bikes by small machinist guys are mostly from passion. But if all the time, effort, and $$'s invested don't make enough to cover cost, the passion for that part fades... The machinist went back to concentrating on parts for nt650 Hawk/Bros, which there seems to be a bigger market for than for vfr parts, which is ironic.....

 

The the final 5th gen version is working great on my bike, as is a 4th gen version on the other bike :)

Ah man, that's a kidney punch right there!  If your machinist already has the necessary jigs/template to produce, I have money ready...

 

Also, re: just bling, as it is likely the best option for a CBS rear delink.

I started to remove the rearsets to change them out for 929 type using Sebs adapters.  I end up de-linking and swapping out the brake system! 

 

The rear system presented a bigger challenge than front as I didn't want to re-use the monster caliper with 2 lines.   Seems like too much compromise.  

 

With a bit of thought, I figured adapting a floating piston Brembo with simple bracket should work.   I just happen to have a 3D printer and have been using Fusion360 to make other things.  It's a perfect opportunity!

 

So, I was able to design an adapter to mount a Brembo P32 caliper to the OEM (5g) hanger!   I should have a part machined for testing very soon.  

 

I test fitted the caliper using 3D fdm parts.  First part was a guess fit as I didn't have the caliper yet.  It fit the hanger but the caliper was way too low. I did have one on my Hawk but I wasn't about to remove it while waiting for one intended for the VFR.  After getting the caliper, it took me 2 prints and several changes to correctly locate the caliper.

 

With a bit of measuring, fitting and designing, it's possible to go this route without changing the whole hanger.   Plus, I don't have to disassemble the hub to change out the hanger.  To me, this was the faster route to change the rear caliper using an adapter bracket and it turned out to be a fun exercise.  I can't wait to get it all mounted.  In the front, it is standard VTR lowers, calipers and MC.  Got the 3mm spacers off McMaster Carr.   The rear line has to be custom kitted. Both masters are 14mm.   Stay tuned!

Could you please tell me more about this?  You can design items using this software, prototype them using a 3D printer and then have them machined by a third party merely by sending them the file?  That would be great!

Autodesk Fusion 360 is cloud based and designs are easily shared.   The shop making the parts also happens to use the same software.   Some design details are specific to 3D.  So going from 3D (additive) to CNC (subtractive), some of the design is changed to be optimized for CAM.

Thanks.  I've got Fusion360 installed, but I have not yet used it.  I will have to look around for some tutorials on how to design for both 3D printing and CNC.

 

I would like to get my own CNC mill someday, but if I can make prototypes on a 3D printer that would get me started.
