Cam reinstall - timing help needed

I like the higher tail, myself. Amd the tail is really long. Try and get it to finish with the back wheel if you can.

I hear you loud and clear on finishing in line with the back wheel. 

 

Tail sticks out longer than the finished article as subframe needs chopping down a bit. It will ultimately stick out as far as the end of the black cowl. That’s just about flush with the wheel. 

 

If I go higher as you suggest it will also help shorten the tail a bit. Do you think the high tail plays nice with the tank? It’s got to flow across the entire bike.

It does have to flow, but it doesn't just mean the flat top of the pillion seat and the flat top of the tank.

The angle of the crease in the tank, the flared section over your legs could line up with the angle of the seat.

 

My higher, more angled seat meant I now had too much leg room, so was a good reason for rearsets.

 

Where does the curve on the front of the seat match up with the curve on the back of tank? That's a really good starting point. I lined that up first, angle was secondary.

Quick update as my build thread has been quiet for some time. 

 

Got to measuring and chopping/welding the Triumph Daytona 675 (2007-12) subframe. All done with hand tools! DE149CCF-AE17-4497-9FA3-C9E8072D6C38.thumb.jpeg.705a9ac2a243ae9dbdb127f6d54f9fe5.jpeg

 

Used a threaded rod with nuts and washers to space out the lower subframe mounts how they need to be (this is actually my home made bearing puller).

Now nice and flush-ish. Then used a bungee cord to hold everything together for the welder.

Everything lined up beautifully and off to the welder...

 

...except the right mounting eye snapped off 5 minutes after installation.

Granted, I was wiggling it around a bit but glad it didn’t happen whilst riding. Also glad to discover the welds are not strong enough now, rather than later. 

 

Any suggestions on where to go from here? 

 

Speaking of stuff breaking, this is what the rear header clamps look like when they saw my spanner - they just fell off like paper!

Higher lines up tail with knee grooves in tank. Lower lines up tail with top of tank. 

 

What do you think? 

 

In the end tail will be about 1.5 inches shorter than it is now. Will finish just before end of rear tyre.

Brief update on rear torque arm for Ducati 848 rear end conversion. 

 

The calliper hanger fouls the swingarm when hub is at its shortest so I had to hack off the Ducati speed sensor mount.

Now the calliper mount swings round all the way. 

 

Making a small brake torque arm arm out of 7075 T6 aluminium (this stuff is HARD!). One end will bolt to the Honda swingarm and the other to the Ducati hanger. 

 

Bolts are 10mm but I’ll be using some very clever plain bearings from igus so need 12mm hole. Centres need to be 45mm apart. 

 

Measurements...

I haven’t got a 12mm drill bit so made 10mm hole (going up from 2mm in stages). Will take it to machine shop to finish as my drill won’t take a 12mm bit.

Regarding the welds...

 

My guess is the original fittings slid up inside the tubes an inch or more and the weld that held them in place was done in such a way that it penetrated the full thickness of the tube.

 

Also consider that you are welding a cast block of aluminium to an extrude tube. You have a chunk and a relatively thin wall of two different types of aluminium to weld. Welding something like that is not all that straight foreward.

 

I don't think there is a way to get the stength you need Butt welding those mounting eyes to the end of the tube like you are trying to do. You could try V'ing out the area to be welded to improve the weld penetration but I think you will need to fabricate something that slides inside the tubes and is then welded the full thickness of the tube wall.

 

Do you have access to a lathe?

Afraid I don’t have access to a lathe. 

 

But I've got another idea - threading the inside of the tube and inserting a threaded tie rod to it. Stronger than welding (I think?) and never been done before!

You had someone weld it for you, didn't you?  Did they know what they were doing?  Or was it just some guy with a TIG (like me, lol).

Yes John, I was recommended to a mechanic nearby who is touted as a welding wiz. 

 

Of course in his defence it is a hollow tube being welded to a solid lump, as Zarquon spelled out. Not easy to do properly.
