Member Contributer Cogswell Posted October 14, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 14, 2015 At the Montrose meet in August there was a good deal of interest in having another PacNW meet based in Oregon. The 2014 Oregon Trail meet changed venues each night, taking us on a good tour of the Eastern part of the state, while the one previous to that was in 2010 at Troutdale, based at McMenamins lodge / brewpub. This would be scheduled far enough apart from a PacNW Kootenay Hootenanny meet so that anyone wanting to do both would have time to get home and re-group. In addition to Troutdale, another choice based in Baker City is included. There are some fantastic roads in the B.C. area. Holding a meet there would be more central to more riders and would make getting there more equal for many. Though not listed as a choice, I'll also put in some rides in the Bend area. Some mentioned the Oregon Coast - I'll leave that to members to make suggestions, if any. If there is stronger interest those rather than either Troutdale or Baker City that could be considered. Here's some info:Baker CityPopulation is about 10,000, so food / lodging / parts & service choices are limitedhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_City,_OregonHotels: The top 3 in B.C. are either right near I-84 and far from town or lack parking. The #4 rated is the Bridge Street Inn where the 2014 meet stayed. Clean, tidy and about $50 per night.http://www.bridgestreetinn.net/Nearby pubs / restaurants - all withing walking distance of motel.http://www.barleybrownsbeer.com/https://www.facebook.com/BakerCityBrewingCompanyhttps://www.facebook.com/Corner-Brick-Bar-Grill-380254838671534/Here's the good part - the riding - lots of possibilities:https://goo.gl/maps/NgLJzvNg12oSumpter was a mining area and has an abandoned dredge that seems fairly popularhttps://goo.gl/maps/pr3Tkv7KBnL2https://goo.gl/maps/HBsHkG1aywJ2http://https://goo.gl/maps/32KAU1MFZ8J2For more ideas, here's the link to the Hell's Canyon Rally held there July 7-11:http://www.hellscanyonrally.com/There is one Honda dealer in Baker City, Cliffs Saws and Cycles. No webpage I could find. My guess is they deal mostly with ATV's and dirtbikes - they may not have much familiarity with a VFR rear wheel or service procedures any more than another brand dealer. There is a Yamaha dealer just a few blocks from the motel.http://www.oregontrailsports.com/index.htmTroutdale - McMenamins Edgefield (Portland metro area)Edgefield was the "Poor Farm" in the 1920's and '30s for the Portland area and converted to a hotel in the '80's. It has its own brewing and wine making facilities on site, full restaurant, billiard hall (10 tables I think), an indoor movie theater, spa, soaking pools, disc golf, and outdoor movies for free in the summer. A room with a Queen bed looks to be $90 per night. http://www.mcmenamins.com/54-edgefield-homeThe location is easy to access on I-84 from the East, or I-5 either north or south.https://goo.gl/maps/Q954ixGw68oIn addition to the Edgefield attractions, for anyone wanting to come early / stay longer there are motorcycle racing and track days at Portland International Raceway, about 1/2 hour away. PSSR and Moto Corsa Track Days are on Mondays (no dates yet), and OMMRA racing is over weekends. On Sunday race events, OMMRA hosts what they call a "Taste of Racing" (TOR) where they open the track over the lunch hour for 20 minutes to anyone that wants to pay $20. On a Viffer 130 to 140 mph speeds are possible on the front straight. Dates could possibly coincide with one if there's sufficient interest. http://motocorsa.com/events/track-days/http://www.pssrtrack.com/schedule.htmlhttp://omrra.com/track-days/The Honda dealers are all on the west side of PDX, however there are several shops closer to Edgefield that could assist with service / tires, including a Cycle Gear about 20 minutes away. Veefer800Canuck
Voted. 100% in favor of Troutdale. Motion carried, Troutdale it is. Poll closed. LOL.
Veefer800Canuck
96 views, 2 poll votes, and 1 reply??? Did anyone see the work that Curry put into his poll? C'mon folks!
Member Contributer V-FORE Posted October 15, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 15, 2015 I voted Troutdale (a little closer), although the Baker City route looks great! Having done both previously you could not go wrong either way!
Member Contributer MaxSwell Posted October 17, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 17, 2015 I saw the poll but being unfamiliar with the area I can't comment. I'd love to get up that way in '16. I'm more in favor of a single location than several different cities. And I'm somewhat sensitive to lodging prices ( as in I'm less than rich). choco
Hey Curry, I didn't choose from your pole as I think there are a few other areas to look at. I sent you a note, check it out. A good argument can be made for Corvallis too. One thing is for sure, if you're going to book Edgefield, then you might want to call and see how it's booking up for summer. When I booked our rooms there a few years ago I couldn't get Friday because the entire Hotel was booked for a wedding a year in advance. Member Contributer RobF Posted October 18, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 18, 2015 I subscribed to the thread but haven't voted yet. Either of the locations would be convenient for me. I agree with choco that Edgefield availability is something of a risk. The specifics of lodging and location will be much less make-or-break for me than will be the specifics of the timing and general itinerary. Thanks for getting the ball rolling. Member Contributer Belfry Posted October 18, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 18, 2015 Bump. Checked in to see how the voting was going--and it was no longer New Content. (Off topic technical question: How come the View New Content tab brings up four pages some times and other times only one? Is it to do with posting date/time?) For me, it normally looks like the capture below. You can see the date range scoping in the left column under "By time period"
Corey
Obviously a lot of time and effort went into this post. Thanks. I vote for Troutdale. Note: I don't think Dutch Mountain/Pumpkin Ridge Road/Otto Miller/ Dairy Creek section is paved. Edited October 20, 2015 by Corkey
Member Contributer MaxSwell Posted October 18, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted October 18, 2015 I'll look at the detail in the links and see if I can come to a semi-coherent conclusion. If I go that far, I'll be looking at allotting a lot of time before and after. I don't travel as fast as I used to. :(
VFROr
Lots of good info and should be a good time from either location. I'd like to make it, need to wait until much closer to summer to see how my vacations options from work shake out.
Member Contributer Cogswell Posted October 20, 2015 Author Member Contributer Share Posted October 20, 2015 Bumping this thread. I removed the poll - the popularity of an Oregon-centric meet is running far behind the Canadian meet that Superfunkomatic is planning. After the details of that are announced we'll see if something can be organized further south so as not to overlap too much and dilute both efforts. I'll leave the thread intact so the links to what's available to do in the Portland area remain available.
choco
Sounds good, I didn't ride nearly as much as I'd have liked last summer so am going to try to make both events.

superfunkomatic
Any updates, Curry? I picked July 22-24, 2016 for the Kootenay Hootenanny. Hopefully that doesn't steal your thunder. Depending on your dates I could be persuaded to attend down there, too.
Member Contributer didit Posted December 7, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted December 7, 2015 Hey Curry, Nice work on all the info. Going back to review. I was waiting to hear from you regarding this and especially looking for dates - so as to draw perspective with the KH in Nelson. I've been to both (BC & Troudale) and there are fantastic roads in either location. If I had to lean, I might lean towards Baker City as there are a ton of small, back roads with little to no slab to get to them. There is a SIMPLY AWESOME place at Service Creek, OR that would be a fantastic lunch stop. Been there 3x and the owners always remember us. Again, need to know your thoughts on dates as I'll be pre-tripping to Newport for a few days as well. Even if you wanted to run a smaller meet up, I'll be going to that area at some point in Summer '16 for sure. Will tag the tread and watch carefully. Sorry I missed the poll. Member Contributer Sparrow75 Posted December 16, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted December 16, 2015 Curry, just saw this thread now. Wow, thanks for all the info. After cutting across Oregon coming back from the fun SumSum3, I gotta say those roads are top of my list for the motorcycling season next year. And troopers only give me warnings in your state...really weird but I won't complain. If anything is planned for Oregon, smallish meet-up or bigger group, please count me in. I personally would love to do a ride from Seaside to Baker City, so many great sights and nice curvy roads to be ridden.
Member Contributer didit Posted December 16, 2015 Member Contributer Share Posted December 16, 2015 CVVFR & I will be doing a tour down to Newport, then 4-5 days across Oregon, Idaho & Washington the week before the Kootenay Hoot. Just working on routes and such now. Once we confirm, I'll be releasing the routes for anyone who wishes to join us - is welcome. Our final goal will be to arrive in Nelson on the Fri, around 2PM via the DH1 up from Creston. Nothing but back, squiggly roads in between. Member Contributer Cogswell Posted December 17, 2015 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 17, 2015 It looks as though unless something changes, due to schedules and other considerations a full-on meet in Oregon will be in 2017. Depending on didit's schedule and route, myself and some others could possibly play hooky from work and catch up for a day ride or maybe an overnight to Eastern Oregon. Others on trips this way also might be able to connect up for some small group rides too. We'll have to see how things shake out.
