When others ask if "riding in full leather suit is uncomfortable?" I respond: "Yeah. It's like wearing a sauna while sitting on an oven. But it has saved my life at least once if not several times."

Like 4 years ago when I visited Keny on my Ace of Spades Baltic Tour!! My leather pants have (some) perforations and wearing a sports longjohn helps wick sweat away, short vented gloves. My leather jacket has a removable front panel with mesh underneath and vents on the arms. Wear a long sleeved sports shirt with a MACNA cooling vest on top. AIM to ride outside towns, avoid traffic lights, keep moving. And drink PLENTY water along the way; or Earl Grey tea!

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted September 2, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted September 2, 2020 Sparkplugs were "probably old" said the PO. So time to bring some modern technology into the game Didn't look too bad, but the Rubicon had been crossed.. . One of the plugs was "loose"; I could remove it by hand. So I made sure I torqued the new ones to 12Nm...

I was wondering the same thing. It looks like a bulwark for mounting a winch...but a winch to where? We can't tell what body of water is there. Maybe an old lock on a dyke? A dredge? Or how about an installation leftover by our German neighbors after the last border dispute? Dunno. Dutchy?

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted September 8, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted September 8, 2020 It is a (12 man) military personel shelter during the baddie's bombardment. Once the shelling stops, the assault is imminent so the soldiers jump out and defend the dike (which is "high ground"). This one has been -literally- sliced open. Art for art's sake eh.... These are all Dutch built and usually you find a row of them along an important dike. Part of our nation's defence strategy was flooding sections of land with 40cm of water. To deep to march/ride through, too shallow for boats. Then they invented paratroopers and started bombing cities indiscriminatingly (i.e. Rotterdam). That dike still froms an important defence against high water (should an other dike break). as there is a motorway running through it, the brigde over the motorway harbors flood gates that can be lowered

Member Contributer Gebruiker Posted September 8, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted September 8, 2020 Still not quite getting it. Did the good guys run a cable from here into the canal to control boat traffic? Much as the highway traffic is apparently being controlled in this photo? 😉
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted September 8, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted September 8, 2020 One day we will make a proper Dutchman of you yet....... but not just yet.... The concrete shelter/bunker was sliced open (with cables yes) to reveal the inside. The wooden walkway is just for show. Well in fact for birds to sit and shit on it a lot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Water_Line

Member Contributer MaxSwell Posted September 8, 2020 Member Contributer Share Posted September 8, 2020 This situation was repeated in WW2 as described in Cornelius Ryan's 1974 book A Bridge Too Far . The bridge at Arnhem proved to be just that. Thanks for the reminder Dutchy.
