Member Contributer Dutchy Posted May 25, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted May 25, 2020 While I now have to wait for my tag, was busy today safety wiring a few nuts and bolts as "vibrator" may be her 2nd name..... 150cc 50's engine, as expected I guess... Note that this is NOT up to USAF/NASA spec, but one deals with the holes presented.... Had the engine running for a wee while, rode up and down the close; then the engine started to run like shyte. Misfiring, poor throttle response.... But, better now than late at night on the Bridge between Denmark and Sweden I guess.... @keny Can you guess from this picture what caused it? The points are directly wired to the battery and it worked fine so far.. all will be revealed here..........

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted May 28, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted May 28, 2020 Main culprit is the piston rings, causing too much pressure inside the carter.... to be continued!

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 1, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 1, 2020 Old skool racer carter vent But she's an alpha female alright, marking her territory Piston rings remain suspect, the vent smokes quite a bit. Like a 2-stroke.... 😞 VID_20200601_145006.mp4
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 1, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 1, 2020 The main leak atm is the oil seal behind the clutch basket. "Auto chain oiler" flings a bit.. New seal is en-route..

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 2, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 2, 2020 The book says I should have 5.9bar compression I get.... So now I know where the over-pressure in tge carter comes from....
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 3, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 3, 2020 My bad, I measured with throttle shut. With WOT Still bad though.... This is the "Sport" engine so I should get 6.1...
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 4, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 4, 2020 Busy afternoon... With the Gilera engine's piston rings most likely shot, I started on the spare "race" engine. Splittjng the cases to fit the (removed by a PO) kickstarter. It dawned on me that both being 150's, it could be simpler for now to swap heads. That would get me back "on the road" quicker. The worn head could then go for a refurb/rebore later. "those in the know" are verifying if this a straight forward swap... "Virginity can be cured Today I removed a piston from a conrod for the very first time. Painlessly Raining today so the wee garden shed had to make do Testing the piston rings by pouring some petrol on the piston No seepage and it cleaned up things nicely To be continued
Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 5, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 5, 2020 Helmet..... Which helmet to wear while riding the Gilera? The Mamola replica? Nah... Too modern... Which definately rules out "The answer's easy if you take it logically..." @Muff

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 6, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 6, 2020 Practise makes perfect, so today I took the head of the oil burning/excess oil pressure engine. Full Metal Jacket, euh Gasket... "Oh....." 1 piston ring broken, other misses a whole section 🤢 So I will go fishing for metal bits with a magnet inside the carter 😉 Aye, needs some TLC Removed clutch basket to reveal farked seal I have a new seal in the shed. Front sprocket is rivetted solid to the clutch basket, so you use it all.... Engine head #3 next, then of to a specialist for apraisal..... Member Contributer Dutchy Posted June 8, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted June 8, 2020 Took the 3 heads to a specialist. He refurbishes all kinds The verdict on mine? The bad and the ugly go in storage "for later use" The good one only needs honing the cilinder and new piston seals. I removed the stuck ones The head joined the WIP queue; ETA 2 weeks 🤞 "Panniers"
