Member Contributer Dutchy Posted December 3, 2019 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 3, 2019 Had a hard time removing the generator. Double checked the parts fiche for any hidden from plain view bolts. But no, it had to be 6,5 decades of corrosion... So had to go McGyver.... Ah! Now I see.... Member Contributer Dutchy Posted December 5, 2019 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 5, 2019 And yet again, another Honda V4 is offered to me. Engine seems farked (waterpump at least) but an ok 1986 engine is included.... Not having spare dry storage space atm, so she will spend the winter outside under tarp.. Member Contributer Dutchy Posted December 6, 2019 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 6, 2019 Piston in spare/donor engine seized solid at TDC. So I created a shallow pool with penetrating oil. Keep that topped up for a while...

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted December 7, 2019 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 7, 2019 Asking 400 Lock ups are scarce in my town; and if they do come up for sale you asre talking tens of thousands.... jeremyr62
EUR400 sounds like a very fair price for a bike with a spare engine in that condition, assuming the tank and plastics are good. V4 Hondas seem to be forgotten bikes when it comes to the classic bike market. I had the opportunity to read two UK bike mags on a ferry the other day, both dealing with old bikes (Classic motorcycle mechanics and practical sports bikes I think). Full of inline fours from the 70s and 80s, mainly SOHC Hondas and Z900 type Kwaks. Not a V4 of any description to be seen. Backing the wrong horse if you expect to flip it and make a shed load of money. (However you have the whole of Europe to sell to so I expect that makes a difference). Member Contributer Dutchy Posted December 11, 2019 Author Member Contributer Share Posted December 11, 2019 Rothko revisited....... Well over 3 years ago I visited Dvinsk/Daugavpils as part of my "Ace of Spades" tour. Destination the Rothko centre as my wife loves his work. Saw my 1st Rothko there, sat there for a while just discovering the piece on display. A larger piece is on exhibition atm and the museum offered the possibility the be "alone with Rothko" for an hour prior to regular opening hours. The room all to yourself, I brought some of my favourite tunes as well.. With redslut R.I.P. it seemed fitting to take the SP vs train&bus, despite the light drizzle and low temps... Rotho produces captivating images no? And......... if the opportunity arrises.............. a windmill picture is called for!

Winter isn't biting and in fact the weather is pretty darn good. With the VF registered as oldtimer for tax purposes, this means no riding in Dec-Feb. So out comes the SP2! Member Contributer Dutchy Posted February 4, 2020 Author Member Contributer Share Posted February 4, 2020 Having removed the clutch basket, RR and generator from the seized engine earlier, time had come to remove the head and spliy the case. Piston was totally stuck at TDC... Aim for the exercise was primarily salvaging the kickstart axle. The running engine currently in the frame lacks one (engine set up for racing duties). And have a fun learning experience... After a couple of week's worth penetrating oil, a whqack with a piece of wood with a mallet had zero effect. So we got the burners out... Smokin' Joe Nope, nada, nothing.... So with this being the "written off engine"we deliberated on the "best" course of action. Faint hearted members please log off now... Kept drilling away till it came loose from the small end.. Aye that one was not gonna move by itself (not a fan of long skirts myself; the shorter the better.... ) And now for the moment we were all hoping waiting for.... Swarf anyone? We were expecting a lot of black sludge on the bottom but this proved incorrect. This engine HAS been stored devoid of any oil; I only was able too drain a very small amount earlier. The rust shows... So now I know how to split a 1954 Italian engine too!
