Does that "tank bra"/base plate have a label with a partnumber? Looked for it online but nae luck...

I gave my (magnetic) tankbag to my niece (poor student..) and am considering options here. The old tankbag I have now leaves black rub marks....

Looks like a Baglux/Bagster.

I actually owned a VF500F for a few weeks on my very first trip to Europe, before I traded it in for a Kawasaki GT750 (yes, I know...) and I remember trying to get some sort of tank bag to fit over that silly fuel tank wart.  My high-tech solution was to get a 1/2" camping foam mattress, cut a hole in it and strap down a rucksack using a bungee cargo net!  Maybe if I'd found one of those "Five Stars" GiVi racks I'd have kept the VF for the trip, but I was concerned about luggage and touring on a chain-driven bike (which was, essentially, my first bike).

Ciao,

Yes, its a Bagster. It's called a Universal Harness; Easy. It fits OK but the Bagster tank bags  I have don't fit it too well. It's almost like the bag fittings are too long. However they do fit with some adjustment of the front straps on the bag and it's a decent solution. There are two versions. The  Easy trail and the  Easy road. Mine is the trial. You might get a better fit with the road version.

Apart from new chain and sprockets, oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, coolant and -why not after 32 years- a new radiator cap..  🙂

Yeah, they lobes/clearances are checked every 6,000km and she gets fresh MOTUL 5100.

I reckon that the VF500's never suffered from "chocolate cams"and mine being an '86, HONDA by that time made absolutely sure the parts were A+...

This time round (3rd check, so after 18,000km) only one tappet required adjustment.

Done 4,000km commuting on her now since August 1st and apart from the occasional small glug glug of adding a bit of engine oil to keep the level spot on, smooth sailing.

After 10-15 minutes warm-up/riding towards the motorway, she's doing a steady 80MPH (and sometimes a "wee" bit more) for 80km's each way. So if she would NOT use ANY oil after 800km blasting I would worry as well.  The Dutchy told me that on their 3 hour endurance VF500 they'd add 1 liter during a race.... :fing02:

I cut and glued an end an oem rubber grip on the end of the throttle tube. Time will tell if it holds...

I've got four VF500 engines, three 86 versions and one 85 before Honda did the upgrades with line bored camshafts etc etc..  Only the 85 has a pair of marked lobes and they are not that badly marked. That engine is toast anyway due to rod knock. The 86 engines are all OK. Hard to know what the real story is. 33 years is a long time for the truth to get corrupted. Anyway who cares now. TLC and a well functioning cooling system are key to longevity in my opinion.. Can't say I notice much oil being used in mine but I'm not commuting on it and 4K km is more than I do in a year.

Can't recall if I've ever posted these, but here's my old one before & after CBR600 wheel change. It's fitted with  Predator 4-1 full stainless exhaust system & made 59Hp on the dyno with 59,000 miles on it, and it as a Hagon replacement shock. I had it for many years before I sold it to buy a CBR600F4. The CBR rear 17" wheel is fitted with a 130/90 section tyre which is 29mm taller than the 110/80 section fitted to the stock 18 inch wheel, thus restoring the stance when moving to the 17" wheel. IIRC the front is a 110/80 which also made the speedo read closer to reality.  It may be for sale from the friend I sold it to, as he has not used it for years, I'd buy it back but don't have space for another bike 😞

The Dutch jury is still out on them white rims. I think mostly because of the spokes/design................    But then again, they voted in favor of a top box!

And just as one should not wear the same shoes day in day out, I jumped on the opportunity to buy a specific new lid....
