ShadowJP88
What do you guys think about putting a CBR1100xx rear suspension on a VFR. I'll change the front too.
curtis
I think installation of a modified CBR929RR shock is fairly common.
wera803
I used a shock off a XX for a little while before upgrading to a Wilbers. It was slightly better than stock (stiffer spring), but still a stock shock and not stiff enough for my weight.
ShadowJP88
From what I've seen from RaceTech site web, my current weight fit exaclt the resistence of the XX. I know the 600rr may be better option but I can have the shock for less than $
wera803
I think I still have it sitting on my shelf if you want to make me an offer. Not sure what shipping would be to Canada though.
Member Contributer Mohawk Posted December 9, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 9, 2014 Unless the shock is new its a waste of effort, they are not great shocks as standard, so if its a few years old & 60 bucks means its probably shot. But if you can make it fit & have it rebuilt it should be good.
ShadowJP88
I think installation of a modified CBR929RR shock is fairly common. But those modified one cost way much... those a standard one from the 929 would be better than a 1100?
Member Contributer Cogswell Posted December 12, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 12, 2014 Have a read through these two threads. Though the CBR600 shock for the VTEC is most discussed, the 929 shock for the 5th gen also gets mentioned as does using the XX shock. If you go to Jamie D. you can get a re-worked 929 shock tailored specifically to you (proper spring rate for your weight and valving) for a very reasonable price. http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/19943-transformed-wow/ http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php/topic/32986-cbr-f4-shock-in-place-of-vfr-shock/
Member Contributer JamieDaugherty Posted December 15, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 15, 2014 The CBR-XX rear shock is no better than the OEM VFR - the parts on the inside are identical. Sure, the spring rate is a tad higher but chances are still not correct for your weight. If you would like some suggestions for your VFR please feel free to check out my site here: http://www.daughertymotorsports.com/vfr800.html
Member Contributer deltaboxii Posted December 15, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 15, 2014 +1 going with Jamie's 929 rear shock. The dude works some magic for our bikes. He has done the suspension on my '01, '07, and Hawk GT. As soon as I can get my '00 over to him he will be doing the Superhawk front fork conversion and 929 rear shock on her also. Auspanglish
Those CBR900 shocks are no good for the VFR in STOCK condition... why? Just think about it... how much does a CBR929 weigh compared to a VFR?? So you know already that a STOCK CBR900 shock will not have the right spring rate for your VFR (and you on top). The CBR1100XX ones will be slightly better due to slightly stiffer spring but not much really. If it were free or dirt cheap it could be interesting for you just to try it out and see for yourself. Nothing lost. A modified one with a spring rate customized to your (and the bike's) weight and riding style would be the way to go. Otherwise there are plenty of other brands out there besides Ohlins making excellent shocks customized to your needs. Wilbers, TFX...

Maybe it's not the greatest option but for a low cost modification, it's the best option. I don't want to spend 500$ for that right now. I will change the front spring as mine are really too weak, so it will balance the front and rear
Member Contributer adeyren Posted December 23, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 23, 2014 Listen to Jamie, he's the expert. I went with a Wilbers only because i'm in the UK. The experts know what they are talking about. Might cost a bit more short term but long term its worth it.
Member Contributer MBrane Posted December 23, 2014 Member Contributer Share Posted December 23, 2014 Money spent on good suspension is never wasted. Money spent on a kludge likely is. Many here have JDM Setups, and are quite happy with his work. I spent a lot on my Traxxion setup, and while I'm quite happy with it I'll be using JDM to do the setup on my track VFR just to spread the funds around.
