Current everyday helmet: AGV Grid (Right; Left is the previous generation GP Tech Limited Edition Rossi Faces Laguna Seca 2010)

post-23419-0-21560700-1412310980.jpg

Previous helmets: Shoei RF1000, Shoei RF1100, Arai Corsair V

(My review below with a link to a very thorough video review at the bottom.)

I picked up the new Corsa helmet (2013 Mugello Rossi Turtle limited edition) a couple weeks ago and so far, it is fantastic.

SHELL/FITMENT: It's an egg-shaped shell with a wider allowance in the back to fit a more natural skull shape. It is a TIGHT fit so you would need to go up half a size (I'm normally a Small but had to get the Small/Medium shell).

WEIGHT: The helmet itself is amazingly light (just a few grams over 3lbs). There is no evidence of weight on your head once you put it on. The only reminder you have that there's something on your dome is the typical squeeze of a track helmet.

NOISE: It is LOUD, but it's a track helmet so it's meant to be worn with earplugs, so complaining about the noise would be the same as complaining about the food at Denny's.

DRAG: I can't feel any wind resistance at all in any position or at high speeds. When I turn my head, there's a slight sensation of drag but nothing more than a breeze. There is a spoiler on the back which helps keep your head down at high speeds. The spoiler is bolted on so is easily removable, but it is clear so that the graphics will show through.

VISIBILITY: The eye port has a 15 degree increase up from the center line since the helmet is meant to be on the tank so the rider has greater visibility in the upper margin of view. Peripheral view has also been increased (which is tremendously useful if you get stuck in traffic while on your way home from a fantastic mountain road).

PADDING: Padding is comfortable and offers great wicking. It is also anti-microbial and is the same material Rossi has in his helmets. I took the helmet for a couple rides in very hot temps and the material did a great job with the effects of summer riding.

AIR FLOW: Air flow is phenomenal and meets the hard-to-believe numbers released in the original overviews (193% increase). There are three vents in the upper front and two in the chin bar with two passive vents in the back. Directional air flow is spread evenly and noticeably more over the temples without any interference with the eyes.

FACESHIELD: Faceshield is shockingly thick but optically correct and has a very easy quick-release system with push tabs in the shield itself rather than on the helmet. Be aware that the dark smoke shield is dark but maybe not as dark as you will expect. It's not a mistake; you did receive the Dark and not the Medium. The shield lifts and closes smoothly and has a half-lock position. Release and lock is centralized so you can use either hand to operate the shield.

GRAPHICS: Rossi's favorite animal is the turtle. He put it on the 2013 Mugello helmet as a combination of his favorite animal with commentary on his performance. On the side of the helmet, there are four figures running in a race. In order from front to back is Pedrosa (orange), Marquez (red) , Lorenzo (blue), and Rossi (yellow). On the back are his two bulldogs, Cesare and Cecilia, wearing turtle shells.

Summary: Amazing engineering. Anatomically correct fitment. Track-bred. Not for upright riders. Not for everyday riding (unless you're on a track everyday). A heartbreaking investment ($900 + $72 tax + $65 dark smoke shield = $1,037).
