Any members heading to the upcoming WSB event at Laguna Seca?

Posted

I'll be there. I have tickets for both days but I don't know which I'm attending.

I will most likely be there. Not sure yet if I'm riding up there.

Of course the ride is the best part, where in SoCal are you. We've got four of us from all over meeting up Santa Clarita Thu AM early. You're welcome to join us. If not, Send me a PM and we'll swap cell numbers and meet at the track.

It's possible I may go. July 11-13. Haven't made any plans yet due to work but I've been know to make a Laguna Seca race weekend at the last moment several times now. I'll check back.

Same deal I guess, PM cell number so we can connect. Since I started the thread I'll look into how to connect all those that go. Right now it's easy, there's only a few. If more come, we may want to plan a time/place sort of thing. See 'ya there!

I'm in Thousand Oaks. My VFR is down right now with a recently leaking petcock which I'm currently trying to source. They don't seem to be available from American Honda any more. I can take one of the other bikes, but they aren't really great for any kind of distance, and I do need to haul up some gear since I will likely have some Media Center duties. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I can resolve my petcock issue in time. If not, I'd be happy to meet you up there.

Anyone going to Laguna Seca for WSBK?

I'm about to buy tickets for the laguna seca race, gonna drive down from Seattle probably. I've been once before but I only went on Sunday. This time I want to camp out at the track for all three days. Any tips or advice? Cannery row is pretty cool with all the bikes but I think it would be cooler to be at the track. I did turn 11 grandstand in 2011, considering turn 4 this time.

Any tips or thoughts are appreciated, or just say hi and maybe I'll see you there

I assume you went to MotoGP in 2011 since WSBK was at Miller that year. The WSBK atmosphere is a lot more laid back than MotoGP. Last year, the crowd was very thin. I hope that moving it to July (with the unfortunate loss of MotoGP at Laguna) and better advertising will bring back some of the fans.

Thanks for the merge. Yeah it was MotoGP Stoner won it. Laid back in a good way or a bad way? I was worried about the lack of MotoGP making the atmoshpere less exciting and not bringing as many companies and such to the infield.

The atmosphere in general is laid back in WSBK. The riders are more approachable, paddock access is easier, crowds are smaller, and there is less hustle and bustle overall. The racing is generally closer which makes it more exciting in that respect, though MotoGP this season has been exciting for sure. There have been a lot fewer companies exhibiting at the US Rounds the past few years (though I noticed the same in Monza back in 2010). I used to be a vendor on Ducati Island about a decade ago, and vendor spaces used to sell out. But back then, MotoGP was still on their hiatus from American soil. Last year's crowd was abysmal, however, I'd like to think it was due to poor planning/promotion and timing (MotoGP events at Miller, Indy, and Laguna -- where many of us Californians had already spent vacation time/disposable income attending).

I used to go every year, sometimes twice in the same year.

Camped at the track a couple times.

A whole different thing than staying in a room in town.

Big party on the hill at night. But most people leave after the races.

The year they gave Rainey curve it's name I was camping up there,

and ran into Wayne Rainey getting an ice cream after the race and most people were gone.

Still have the shirt with the dirt of Laguna Seca, and Waynes autograph.

Got a Mick Doohan championship shirt that Mick signed at Laguna too.

Got burned out on the price gouging, traffic, and crowds, and haven't gone the last couple years.

This year will probably use what vacation time I can scrounge to visit my daughter and 3 grandsons that live 2000+ miles away.

I have tickets, but I'm iffy. If anything I'll be there Sunday, but driving the car. Lame.

Did you end up going?

Finally got to formally meet Larry and Mr. RC45.

Nah I ended up locked in meetings/negotiations all day Saturday and through lunch Sunday. Managed to watch race 2 on my phone...looked like a wild one.

Good news is one of my buddies in SF used my tickets so at least somebody had fun.

Hopefully will meet most everybody at the Golden State Gathering.

Sorry you couldn't make it. Race 2 was wild indeed.

I'm happy to hear that tickets weren't wasted :)

I was there with my wife Sunday only.

Crowd died down as soon as AMA Sportbike was done, and was like a ghost town after SBK Race two.

It was my first time at Leguna Seca, or any motorcycle racing event, and I like the fact it was not packed/crowded.

Did not do paddock, just GA / turn 4 grandstand seats.

I was most surprised that Honda didn't have a booth...

Looked like a great time...who won AMA? Last time there was 2005 when Hayden won. Started going when I bought my 84 Interceptor..now those were wild times up there. Thats when turn 1 went straight up to the cork screw...and that of course is

when AMERICANS RULED.....

Any pictures guys?

The commentators in TV here in NL commented that the "crowd" was even smaller than previous years...

Tumbling down the corkscrew was scary, good thing that after "Rossi" they made the inside a bit more solid..

Got back from WSBK last night. Pretty epic ride there and back from San Diego. Got pulled over by the CHP five minutes after leaving the hotel...he didn't like our group splitting a slow car In the middle lane. Pretty cool chip, lectured me and let me go.

Race was lightly attended, but a bit better than last year. That's just the way it's going to be for a few years. I think the disaster that is the DMG led AMA series is a factor - no draw there. Also, some friends rode to COTA this year and didn't have budget/time for WSBK too. They hated the ride over to COTA from SoCal and won't do it again. So next year there may be more West Coast GP fans staying "home" for WSBK. I've been going to Laguna since '94 and have seen the changes back and forth between GP and WSBK. It always takes a few years of consistency and the crowds come back. Monterey is a beautiful place, then venue is superb and the ride anywhere from the Rockies west includes some of the best rides you can make on a bike.

Hoped to meet up with BrainF but as he said, he had a work-interfering-with-life issue.

I'll try to post some pix in the next few days.

BTW, the Gen 7 suspension was adequate at best...I'm looking to makes changes now.

Don't know which way they rode to COTA but I've made the trip from CA to TX and there is a great route to take if they can deal with high speed. Go through Barstow and hit the 40. That will take you from Barstow, through Flagstaff, to Albuquerque, finally to Amarillo, at which point multiple routes can be planned to Austin. From Barstow to Flagstaff, I held it at 85-100 the whole way. I'll be doing the TX to CA trip soon for WSBK, and that route is the way to go. You can fly :D

Josh Hayes won Superbike. I started going in 1988 shortly after they added the infield section. Yes, wild times back then!

Unfortunately, no pics on my end. My buddy is the photographer/videographer for Graves/Yamaha and I tend to shoot paddock and lifestyle pics, but got wrangled into some other obligations, so the camera didn't even come out.
