Is this Supposed to be in my Fuel Line?

Working on my 1987 project bike, I found this in the fuel line. Since the tank was disconnected, I don't know if this was used to plug the fuel line or if it's supposed to be in the line. It looks like it might be a one-way valve.

From the grooves on the LHS it looks like it was once molded into a plastic device of some sort, maybe a fuel filter or a pressure gauge?  In any case, whatever it was is long gone...

Good point. This piece isn't actually anything. It's what's left of something. Guess I don't need it.

This looks like standard check valve (or non return valve) I am wondering if there was a petcock issue in the past?
