Hello from Lancashire, North West UK

Hi all, been a bit of a lurker here for a while but bought a 2007 6th Gen VFR800 a week and a half ago. It's a really nice bike with a few tasty modifications. Looking forward to saying hello and asking some advice. Great forum - already found the service manual - brilliant stuff. Done my first oil change and thinking of doing the coolant next.

Side note - I wasn't able to confirm my account because the emails didn't come through to either gmail.com or mail.com (DMARC issue?). Managed it with a temporary sharklasers.com address but not ideal for getting notifications of replies etc. Any good workarounds to get my gmail address on my account and confirmed? Thanks.

Hi and welcome.

Can't help with email issues but some pics of your bike would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard.

Mite check your spam folder for emails - never know.

We're all in to bike porn here - as Skids mentioned - photos always appreciated!

Ah thanks for the warm welcome! Pictures as requested.

The bike is a late 2007, just ticked over 20k miles in the week I've had it. Service history was fairly meticulous until 2018 when it went to the guy I bought it off, who didn't service it, but only did about 800 miles in 4 years. I've changed the oil and air filter, and plan to do the coolant, but will be dodging the brake fluid change for sure haha!

Mostly standard but has Staintune cans, Motad stainless downpipes, which sound absolutely awesome. Also a nice custom seat, and Oxford heated grips. My first heated grips woohoo.

I was very unhappy with the low speed throttle response, but have done the PAIR mod and that's made an enormous difference. Also got o2 eliminators on older so will see what effect they have. Not planning on buying a piggyback ECU at this stage. Next step is to fit a new tank pad and line it up properly, the one it has now is wonky as you can see in the pictures

Oh, nearly forgot. Does anyone watch HeroRR on Youtube? I had an airbox situation extremely similar to his. Couldn't believe what was in there, and the snorkel has been nibbled.

They are nasty little F'rs, aren't they?   Love the candy red!

As for brakes, there is an excellent how to pinned in the maintenance forums. It's a highly recommended service, as neglect can wreak havoc on the linked system.  If the secondary master cylinder clogs, it can cause the rear brake to drag - can be a problem.  If you need assistance with that,  lots of help here for you.

Absolutely! I'd only watched that HeroRR video a few days before doing the service, and I couldn't believe what he found in the airbox. Then it turns out my bike is exactly the same haha

As long as they've left my wiring loom alone that's the main thing. It seems fine.

Thanks for the tip on the brakes - VFR combined braking looks like a real deep-end place to learn how to do fluid changes, but I found the oil and air filter change really rewarding so will look into it.

And yes the colour is nice isn't it. It doesn't always photograph well, it looked maroon in the advert photos from the seller, but in reality it looks great especially in the sun

Have a look at this as well, good explanation and easier to visualise than the excellent guide on here. I'd use both.

I just noticed that you have ABS.  Nice score!

I might add that the tough part of changing fluid on these is the secondary master cylinder (SMC) and the proportioning control valves (PCV).  If you don't know the trick to it you'll think it's possessed by demons.  If you do know the trick to it (in the guide), you'll wonder why anyone ever thought it was a big deal. And, there's no difference between ABS or not in the procedure.  Anyway - definitely an oft overlooked and highly beneficial bit of maintenance.

Congratulations on your 6th gen. and welcome to the forum from Ohio, USA!  🙂

That air filter, wow!!  The last several years I had my 6th gen. I would open up the airbox to check it for critters and nests before firing up the bike for the first time each spring.  I had to clean and recharge the K&N air filter anyway, so it was best to check it out before starting the bike after it had sat in my garage all winter.

Curious how many miles you ride a year. I clean/oil mine every 10k miles but it is usually already clean. I suspect they're good for 30k or so between cleanings unless one is in a dusy/dirty environment. Or there are things living in it. lol

Most years I averaged 8-10k miles on my VFR, so I cleaned and recharged the K&N air filter annually.  There were a couple years I only did about 1,500 miles, so the following pre-season maintenance I just re-oiled the filter instead of seriously cleaning it.  Also, that's in NE Ohio, so not a dusty environment.

Welcome to the asylum Dorian. You obviously have great taste in mc's.

I've had signs of critter's nests in two of the fifth gens I've purchased. Seems critters have found good taste in airboxes also. (HeHe)
