Hi guys last weekend I picked up a 1999 VFR800 with some rough looking aftermarket fairings.

Over the week I put it back to factory height and reinstalled the OE fairings.

It has generic looking clutch and front brake master cylinders. The clutch is really heavy, especially with a broken lever. I'm already planning on replacing that.

The brakes work but don't feel great, the rear is very soft and has a lot of movement before it grabs. The front lever is hard but the front brakes work ok.

What I'm wondering is, did the cheapo front brake master mess up the linked braking?

If this is the wrong place to start asking tech questions I'll make a more detailed post in the appropriate section.

Thanks for the input! And I'm glad to have found a great knowledge base for these old bikes!

	Hi,

my name is Radek. I'm from Poland.

A few days ago, I bought a Honda VFR 800 FI in excellent condition, ready for the season. I want to install a small Givi tank bag, but I'm having trouble finding a Givi BF mount (a ring attached to the fuel filler neck) that fits my bike. Does anyone have one of these mounts and could provide the part number? Thanks in advance. Best regards to everyone. Radek

	Coincidence, or what?!?

So, I'm buying a ~275 year-old, three-story "canal house" in the Netherlands with a ground floor which is destined to be my new garage. Not an American-sized garage by any stretch of the imagination, but if I can manage the space well it should be big enough to meet my current needs. The total garage area is about 40m2--with 3.5m ceilings. The challenge is that if I want to be able to use the space as a workshop (and I do), I've got to find some place to store 9-10 motorcycles... (No, selling them is not an option!)

My tentative solution is to use the garage's height in a creative way, such that I will build a heavy duty shelf 2m off the ground on the three side walls and lift the bikes up and down using an electric "pallet stacker". The shelves will be constructed from 41x41 Unistrut, with 1m-spaced verticals attaching at the floor and the ceiling (as well as to the walls). I'll use a 45-degree shelf support bracket made of welded rectangular tube attached to the horizontal and vertical struts. The bikes will sit on metal "sleds" I will design and build, which may be based on the Baxley-type wheel chocks I have 6 of now, or maybe on an ABBA stand-type design. The stacker can lift 1000kg 3.5m (it was either that or install some sort of winch/gantry system to the ceiling--this is simpler!)

I'm not a structural engineer, but I've read a bit about the Unistrut system, which is quite versatile and very strong. I won't need to weld anything to the Unistrut (which is good, because it is galvanized steel...), but I can build the 45-degree brackets and the "sleds" from mild steel tubing and plate. I should have enough room for six bikes, even if I only use the side walls. I can only ride one at a time, so as long as they are accessible (and the floor area remains free of obstruction), I should be able to retrieve them whenever I want to worn on them or ride them. It should look something like this:

The front wall will have 4x folding doors with windows above, plus there are french doors at the back and a small office. I should get plenty of light.

Thoughts...? (Especially re the crazy shelf idea!)

	Cheers,

Just got my hands on a 2007 VFR. It came with saddlebags and a few other goodies. For the couple days I've had it, I love it so far. Only problem I've ran into so far is the aftermarket cruise control module on it won't set, but thats a project for another day. I found some things that came with the bike noting this forum from 2015, so figured I would check it out. Previous owner said the bike has been loved by many people in the past.

	Hi everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I've recently purchased a 2014 VFR800f and found some useful info on here.

I'm based in Thurrock, near London, UK. I haven't even ridden the bike yet as my insurance is changing over in just over a week.

I'm coming from a CBR250R (single cylinder). I really enjoy riding the cbr especially for it's filtering and fuel economy but I wanted something a bit more stable for the motorway roads. Just a little worried about the weight of this VFR but I'm sure I'll get used to it after a while. I've changed the mirrors (aftermarket Kawasaki Ninja) and soon to be adding a R&G cover for the clutch housing to hide the scratches from a previous owner.

	Previous bikes in order are:

	NSR125rr, CB600f hornet, TL1000r, GSX-600r SRAD, CBR250r

I opened the clutch today and everything seems fine.
Discs-3mm.
Springs-44.35mm.
The basket is not playing.

Hello dear bikers, VFR enthusiasts and all who feel similar 🙂

I registered a long time ago, but I never actually introduce myself, so better ever then never.

I'm Denis and I'm from Croatia, 38y/o, and driving two-wheelers from very distant youth. There were small 50cc manuals, tuned 50cc 2T scooters, 125 2T sport bikes (Cagiva Mito inclusively), FZ6, Z750, racing 180 2t scooters and etc... I fell in love in one RC36 also when I was a kid, but at that time I didn't even know which brand it was and why it has so beautiful sound. Actually I thought it was V2 but high revving model (apparently I didn't know much about mechanics and engines back in the day) 🤣

After I tried friend's 1998 RC46 for the first time in 2021 (he actually stole my idea after selling his SV1000), I said that's it, and same year I bought my first VFR, silver RC46 from 2001. She was 20 years old, but she didn't give any sign of fatigue. 106 HP, slightly schratched in the front, previously repainted, but mechanically perfect. 258km/h top speed, niiiiice 😙

But I don't like silver. 😴 For me it's the color of the primer, ready to put some COLOR, red, blue, yellow, orange, even black!!!

So I did what had to be done.

And it was nice one and a half year, one of the best tours in my life, a lot of commuting, freerides, turned 26 thousand kilometers in total. 1999, imported from Germany, well preserved, also mechanically very good, 114 thousand kilometers, yeees manual choke, not that nice gauge background as facelift version, not that nice mirrors... but BOS high-mount exhaust, sport air filter and remapped ECU. A lot of original accessories (Honda tools, passenger grips and original passenger seat cover)... and 270 km/h 😎🫢🤪😮 Plus stronger pull from lower rpms. Everything you need from a bike. And after one year and 8 months, she's still here, but 30 thousand kilometers older (plus one battery which died). Uh, what a bike. She still puts a smile on my face. And almost 150 tkm... Well done Honda 😉

Hi from Brisbane, after a technical glitch which locked me out of the forum, I am back. Over the past four years I have been working (maybe too slowly) on resurrecting a very rough '89 VFR750. It was supplied from the factory to Australian specifications and last registered back in 2009. In a very sorry state, so bad the seller was trying to market her without the fairings attached, presumable so any prospective buyer would not be put off by their condition. Finally completed to my taste, all fairings repaired and now painted in the earlier '86 tricolor (US) color scheme, I think she looks the part.
A new muffler set c/w pipework in stainless steel, modified seat to accommodate my custom-made tail box - she is all my own work. There are numerous minor changes I made - like replacing the ugly front indicators with the clean lines of the Japanese domestic market product, heated grips, tire pressure monitors and the removal of pillion foot pegs. I have done little to the engine, new seals and gaskets, new valve guide seals, carb overhaul and a coat of paint is about it.
I have done two complete oil and filter changes using engine flush product to clean any unwanted residue and currently run semi-synthetic10-40w oil.

Ther is no point in an engine overhaul just for the sake of it, she is no longer smoking so perhaps I got off easy?
She runs nice, and I have been out clocking up km's without any issues to date but it has only been a couple of weeks so who knows?

Photo as attached gives a general idea of her appearance - hope you like my VFR - saved from the wreckers!

I needed another project like I needed a hole in the head, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity to own another 6th gen. So I did a thing this past weekend and bought a non-runner from a member of VFRd that was posted for sale a few hours from me.

Anyway, I'm excited to potentially (assuming I get it running) be back on a VFR. I had originally sold my '02 VFR that I had put 52,000 miles on to get into sportier MCs. After stints on a Buell 1125R and Triumph Daytona 675 and three spinal fusions in my neck, I could no longer ride sport bikes for long stints ( I SPORT-toured on both of those bikes). So the Daytona was sold in favor of a Triumph Tiger 1050, my current ride, which I really like except for the poor wind management.

The VFR I purchased has very low miles. The tank has some rust in it that will need to be addressed but other than that, I think it will just be things like new tires and a refresh of fluids to get her back on the road. I'll most likely start a refurb thread here once I get into it.

	Hello everyone!

The name's Chris. Been lurking around these parts for a couple years since I got my 2008 Viffer back in 2023. I'm located in Singapore, where the VFR population is slightly under a 100 (we have exactly 1 known 8th gen here). Currently in the midst of doing a front end swap to take the 8th gen lower and doing a handlebar swap to replace the clip-ons. Had a Laser Deeptone installed but the super strict Land Transport Authority here almost fined me since I didn't have any legal documentation to get it approved. Looking forward to learning more and meeting more Viffer owners!

I recently brought an in need of some TLC, vfr800, 2007, in Candy red, as a bit of a winter project, it needs cam tensioners, panel bolts and clips, wheels and forks painting and a general tidy up to bring it back to a great bike again, oh and an MOT, its fairly tidy just needs a little love.

Had the 6th gen since October last year. In May it left me beached with a failed RR and also having taken out the stator when I measured the output from it. Replaced the stator and fitted a MT09 (and other Yamahas) RR unit with 10AWG wiring everywhere 😃. 17k miles

The 750 hasn't let me down and has standard electrics afaik. I'll be doing a full service inc valve clearances soon, as I have little history for it. Sourced an 8 spoke and had the wheels powder coated in RAL9006. Exhaust came with it. 25k miles.

The 400 is unrestored stock spec apart from electronic ignition. Er, 3k miles genuine!

	Kind regards!

I've been really impressed by the positive reviews and comments by members regarding the Crossrunner so I started looking and after 10 minutes found this example. 2021, with just 476 miles! I collect it in a couple of weeks and I guess I'll be doing the first service myself then 😁

Hi all. I've been after a VFR in one form or another since 1999. I had a white VFR 750 on my bedroom wall when I was growing up. The thing I wanted most in the world. My mum essentially banned me from motorbikes. My older brother was a little 'unruly' and rode motorbikes. Broken legs. Arms. Didn't do me any favours, thats for sure. So, I got into cars. But that urge never left me. I promised myself that once our three kids had flown the nest, I'd grab my dream. I did my CBT, bought a CB125R and began my dream. It took me everywhere. I sold my car. My profile pic says it all. It never skipped a beat. Apart from the time I washed it in petrol (long story😂). I've been saving for three years for an 8th gen in white. Stuff happened. Money went, leaving me £2100. So, I've changed my target. This is in a dealer round the corner. 23k miles. Service history. 3 owners. 2000 model. £2100. It's fate, right? Blue though. And that exhaust will have to come off. I live in a terraced cul de sac. I start work at 0100. I imagine the neighbours will set fire to it quite quickly. Thoughts? Am I mad or is it my dream realised? I've done my research, but would love some real world advice. Thanks. John.

	Greetings all,

Just picked up a 2003 VFR with 6.5k miles on the clock, haven't been riding in 7 years, my previous bike was a Hornet so decided to stay honda for the return to 2 wheels.

Bike had a stack of service history and All MOT certs over its 21 years, even though it has only done 6500 miles. 2nd obvious issue on the way home was the tyres, the first was the way it behaved below 3000rpm.

Starts first time and very smooth until up to temp, then it's idle is a little lumpy, sounds like it's about to cut out every few cranks but never actually does, not terrible but could be smoother,.... I think

So based mostly on posts I have read on here the things to tend to are possibly gummed up injectors from sitting with old fuel in the tank, or starter valves needing balanced or both. It had a leaking fork seal after an 80 mile ride home, but also invoices for new seals replaced 3 years and about 200 miles ago. The very small leak stopped after 100 miles of riding so probably dry seals just caught in time and hopefully just need to keep an eye on it.

I did a very dumb ass thing ....I neglected to check the date codes on the tyres before purchase, by about 5 mile into my trip home, I was just getting used to riding a bike again but definitely noticed a harshness to the ride. A moment of squirreliness from the rear on two very medium slow speed turns and I checked the dates. Rear tyre almost perfect, looked like 500 miles on it , it was 15 years old. Front tyre was 9 years old. Got some mid range sport touring on today and it's the single biggest upgrade experience I have had in 35 years of driving anything.

I can 100% attest that absolutely perfect looking 15 year old tyres are like ice skating compared to fresh rubber.

I will hopefully have more to contribute to the forum , loving the vfr 800 so far.

Sincere thanks to all the posters to this forum, so much knowledge stored over the years on this great motorcycle its hard to come up with questions that haven't been covered.

	So.....

You guys literally made me do it!

	Hello folks,

I do apologize for what I'm about to write.
I betrayed the cause 😁
Yes, I did.
I knew it deeper in my gut, but I never wanted to admit: VFR G5 is a fantastic machine, indeed, and it's probably one of the most noble bike ever but in the end it doesn't win me over.

During my tuning setup I worked to get the VFR more sporty, more radical, more visceral; something that a VFR definitely isn't.

Then, a month ago, I had the occasion to go out for a ride with this old wreck:

Not so old (2003) but in very poor maintenance conditions: timing chain tensioners about to fail (as well as what happens with G6), repainted and crashed, with left side fairing scratched and footpeg bent down, VERY BAD electrical jobs on the tail lights... IN SHORT, THAT SUCKED.

But guys... I fell love at the first corner ❤️
This bike, probably one of the last carbureted big bikes, gives a purely mechanical connection with its pilot, something rough and ancestral.
I decided with no hesitation: I traded an even exchange with my VFR, with no expenses for me (any bureaucratic fee on the previous owner) and I took it in my garage.

Dismantled...

...and renewed taking inspiration by what done on the VFR (coil conversion, for example)
here's how it is now:

And much much more is coming (exhaust brackets by my design, footpegs, suspensions upgrade, overall lightening, etc). This bike gave me enthusiasm again, so it definitely worth the step.
I'm sorry to leave the VFR, but this bike better matches my current idea of riding: I have no longer time and possibility for long rides, I can only take the bike out for a short and intense gallops (1h max), and the VTR makes it beautifully.

I want to thank you all for the inspiration and support you gave me.
This community is a rare thing on the net; I'm glad I met you.

	THANK YOU

Hi everyone, I noticed the cam chain was rattling really badly, It has a manual cct at the back, i tried setting the tension whilst turning the engine slowly by hand at the same time but then I did this it was diffucult to turn then almost cracked loose and I assume that was the chain jumping and then catching again on the cam sprocket due to being so loose .

I tried starting it after setting cct and it wouldn't fire up so I checked the timing and found it looks to be out of time by a few teeth, can anyone confirm This before I adjust the timing
