  1. Hello All, Ive just become the proud owner of a 1998 VFR800 and thought I'd join the forum. She's rather high mileage at 68k and a bit of a shed really but I've wanted one of these for many years so will spend some time tidying her up. Luckily I've know my way round a toolbox and have done a couple frame-up rebuilds in the past. Not planning anything quite so involved with the VFR though. Riding style is mostly brisk weekend jaunts and the odd track day - looking forward to bonding with the old girl! Never thought I'd get on with linked brakes but prepared to give them a chance. After all, they should reduce diving and rear wheel lockup. Not sure how they will feel at "elevated" speeds though. She has an old worn Sergeant seat that is comfy and stainless exhaust can. Everything else is stock (and most of it needs upgrading). Electrical system seems weak and only shows 12.4 bolts with engine idling. No increase at 5k rpm either so stator and/or RR are probably toast. Hoping to replace RR with SH847 as they sound bulletproof but these are brand new and really expensive. Not sure if I should get the old stator rewound or buy another (cheap Chinese ones on eBay or expensive American ones probably made in China anyway?). Suspension is sloppy and vague on both ends so suspenders will need rebuilding/upgrading. Lots of great info on this site about swapping fork internals - going to look into that! Might get YSS rear shock or get a Fireblade unit rebuilt as per advice on here. Looking at other 325mm Suzuki shocks too. Brake system will need complete overhaul, including new discs and braided lines. Fluid looks like Guinness. Also intend to do valve clearances as judging by the state of this bike they've probably never been done. Then full fluids/filters service and fit Scottoiler as they really make chain adjustment easier. Ultimate goal is to have a mechanically sound machine that can be used through winter salt, weekend jaunts, and the odd track day. Basically I plan to beat on her mercilessly until the wheels fall off. The site is full of excellent advice/knowledge that I intend to use. Hopefully in time I will be able give something back as I learn more about this wonderful machine. Stray
  2. Hello from Monterey county! Picked up my first Vfr last month, new 2014 Vfr 800f, and I have to say, i absolutely love it. Big transition from my previous ride, a 1993 HD Flhs, but im very happy i made the switch. Hope to see you all out there, keep the rubber side down and your vtech roaring
  3. storing/regular main

was wondering what everyone suggest for just general maintenance as well as had a few questions too! I have a 1997 vfr and the previous owner had just water instead of coolant and I want to switch it to coolant: 1.) where is the coolant reservoir located? 2.) do I need to drain the water first or can I add coolant to it? what can I add to the gas I read once about something that can keep it from getting gunked up I'm going to be away from the bike awhile, a friend is gonna take care of it and run it a bit but i still just want to be sure! I'm new to this so literally any advice would help! Thanks!!
  4. Hi I am new to the site and new to own a 2010 VFR1220 DCT. 20 Plus years of riding experience and had Yamaha's, Suzuki's and Kawasaki's but this is my first time on a Honda. What did the add say 30years ago; You meet the nicest people on a Honda. So lets give it a whirl and see all the nice people here.
  5. New Here! On A Cbr250!

Hello! My name is Zack. I'm from Minnesota. I'm 22. My first motorcycle I owned is the one I still have. I have been riding for about a year now with a 2012 Honda CBR250R. I don't have a VFR but I want one someday. I decided to start on a 250 because I needed to start slow. It's just the way I learn. Recently I have had the chance to meet two really great guys on my trip to Duluth, MN for the open house of Aerostitch. We decided to ride to the twin cities together after the open house. That is when I got the chance to drive a 1986 Honda VFR. LIFE CHANGING. What a smooth ride. So that's me. I look forward to this community!
  6. Hello all. I bought my '04 with only 4700 miles and brand new shoes a couple months ago, and am finally getting around to introducing myself. Its the rainy season up here just north of Seattle WA, so riding is hit or miss. but in my spare time I have already taken care of the air box mods, switched out the clutch and brake levers, changed the oil, K&N filters all around, and my EBC brakes are in the mail. Did the decals too to add a sporty touch and hopefully a PCV and full Delkevic system are in the cards for over the winter. This forum is an amazing place and I look forward to chatting with many of you as my love affair with this bike continues. Cheers
  7. Good evening! I just purchased an 1985 VF700 Interceptor Saturday, and have it sitting in my garage to clean it up. It starts and runs, but there's a clicking or ticking sound and I'm not too familiar with how it SHOULD sound. It's fitted with supertrapp mufflers, has just about 90k miles, and leaks oil. There's a few issues with the wiring or electronics. Its not a beauty but hopefully will be at some point. I'll have some pictures and a video of the bike so you can hear exactly what it sounds like! So first question is "Does this sound OK?" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y9JQmO3vcI&feature=youtu.be (Can't upload .mp4) And second question, "When I press the right turn signal, the relay clicks, the rear lamp doesn't light up, the dash lights dim. The front right lamp ins't there but the wires are connected; any ideas?" -The left signals work as to be expected. Also; the headlamp doesn't light up. I know the bulb is working but high beam low beam does nothing at all. Thanks for any and all help! -Matt Whittaker PS:I live in Southern California in Rancho Santa Margurita, so if anyone else is around there, Cook's Corner away!
  8. I just bought a 1992 VFR750 on the weekend. In fact it is featured in the 2012 VFRworld calendar for October. It is totally stock with the exception of a K&N air filter. It's in good working order and really doesn't need anything, which is good because I don't have much money to throw at it. Being new to VFRs, are there any inexpensive mods or aftermarket parts that are worth doing? So far I'm thinking: - swap out the red rear turn signals for amber ones, or I was even considering going clear all around (any ideas where to get them cheap?) - maybe find some frame sliders to protect the mint body work (any ideas who makes some for this year?) - new battery (what type would you suggest?) - I heard about the wiring upgrade (VFRness) thing. So I will be checking to see if it has been done yet. Eventually maybe upgrade the suspension and exhaust, but I don't think I can afford that right now. I'm sure I'll be spending some time on this forum. Seems like a great resource so far.
