First Place!! - Misty Roads--GA Hwy 60 in October

tyrroneous

This was taken back in October of 2004. The whole time I was up in the hills, it was rainy and foggy. I was determined to get some riding in though, albeit at a slower pace. It was still fun.

One of the things I like about this shot is the way the curve disappears into the mist.

Those of you that voted for this pic. Why? The bike is cropped out of the foreground and the background is obscured with fog. I understand it looks cool with the fog, but the pic is not balanced and only VFR riders would know it's a VFR. I'm not saying the picture is no good all I'm trying to do is understand why 40 people have voted for this pic?

VFR FLA,
I like the pic  but understand your confusion. I would be curious to see how many are new members and first time posters <_<

I think it is one of the most creative framing and subject pictures here. Most of our shots are just our bikes in front of a nice background. There's really not a lot of skill to take a picture of our bike's and the people who are lucky enough to live near really beautiful surroundings, have it that much easier.

I don't see how several of these shots even made the finals including mine ! But hey, it's not Kodac.com is it ! :-)

I liked it right off, good job TY.......... !

This picture is not just a picture. Everybody can take a picture of the bike and something in the background. Just because there is a bike on the picture it does not make it good picture. Almost all us know how our bike looks like. Many of the contestant's picures was nice and clear. But many times the angle and the composition of those pictures just were not right. Those pictures look interesting at the first sight, but they could use some adjustment. It has happened many times with me when I saw a wonderful thing and I was trying to take a pic of it. In the big excitement I forgot to look at the picture what I was going to take. The picture always looks different through the camera than seeing with your eyes. So, at home when I saw the pictures on my computer I was very disapointed because I did not see what I took a picture of.

This picture is somehow a nice mixture of bike, nature and the road. I like it a lot as the road mysteriously disappears.

I did not want to offend anybody with this writing. That would be just my amateur photographer opinion.

VFR_FLA,

Let me see if I can answer some of your questions without sounding artsy-fartsy (which I am not)...

I'm no professional photographer, its not even a hobby of mine. But I did take a class back in highschool (14 years ago, sheesh, am I getting that old?) that taught a little bit about photography. What I remember most about that class is the Rule of Thirds. Basically, the rule or guideline is that you divide the frame up into thirds horizontally and/or vertically, putting your subject at the intersections or on one of the dividing lines. Go here for a better explanation: http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/com...ose/thirds.html

With this picture, I tried to make the VFR take up the left third of the frame. It actually ended up being a little more than a third, but you get the idea. The road takes up the other 2/3rds. And really, now that I'm thinking about it, its almost as if the road is really the subject of the picture. Basically the first thing you see is the bike, and then your eye catches the white line of the road and follows it off into the background. I really like how the road disappears around the corner and into the fog. The fog really adds a lot of mystery to the shot, which is kinda why I like to sport-tour...I like to find out what's around the next bend. Why did I cut off half of the bike? I think the 6th Gens look incredible from a front view, but as I framed the picture in the camera, it just looked better if I cut off half the bike.

So there ya go. A few explanations. Most of the reasons why this picture turned out so well for me can be summed up on two words: dumb luck. I'm really surprised that so many people have voted for this picture. I didn't even expect to be in the finals due to all the other cool shots I've seen on this board.

Ty- don't get me wrong their is nothing wrong with the picture. I do like it, but to vote on a picture with a VFR in it and this one has the most votes, I was just trying to find out why? There are some really good photos submitted that didn't get half of the votes this one did.

And you are right it really show the interaction between the road the bike and the weather.

Honestly, the first thing I noticed was your Dragon decal on your windscreen. Then the moisture droplets on the windscreen.

I was wondering if the photo would look even better in Black and White. Or would that take away the Honda Red too much.

VFR_LA, obviously not everybody is going to like the same picture...and thats fine with me. Like I mentioned above, I too am surprised that so many have voted for this picture since every one of the finalists are great photos.

I too have wondered if it would look good in B&W, but haven't spent the time to play around with the picture to find out.

After searching for "action" shots I was disappointed in not finding a single photo of a VFR on the move. They are all "My VFR in front of ..." Where is the action guys? However, given the choices submitted, I pick this one in the mist simply on artistic impression. Not crazy about the dragon that initially caught my eye. Funny what each person sees first given the same photo.

TY Congrats on the big win. Some very tough competiton to be sure. You are top dog. The bike, the fog, the twisties fading off into the fog. I found it to be a very artsy photo................

Way to go bro!!!!

It is very hard to take an action picture when you are alone... You ride or you take the pic. What would you do? Would you let somebody to ride your bike or would you let somebody to try to take a picture? Who would take a picture might does not exactly knows what you want to take a pic of.

Congratulations on the fine photo. Enjoy them tires! (envy) hah! Creative framing of the scene and subject is probably the most difficult thing to do as most of the time I think we are to caught up in the time to settle back and observe. Fine job here. As to action shots thats pretty hard to do and next to impossible if you are alone. My brother and I staged up on a sharp corner next to a wheat field and tried it once. Very tough to do. Panning and framing that takes talent! Congrats on the win, Steve

Why I voted for the picture is... The "face" of the bike in the picture, to me the VFR has character in its appearance alone which sort of goes along with the character of the bike. Even the half of the front shows it.

The rain and fog also capture the whole personality of many who ride one. The rain or fog don't stop me from riding, My VFR is no garage decoration. The twisty road leading away to a new place to see and experience...The VFR out in its element, doing what it was made for and doing it for the people it was made for. I also liked the 'tail of the dragon' sticker too. Black and white works for some photo's but I would leave this one just the way it is!

Good pic. I would like to have seen one about 20 or thirty feet further from the bike so you could have kept the road and fog but included more of the bike. But still, a good pic. Good eye.

Yep, great shot.

Nothing is the centre of focus.

The entire image is the feature point...enviroment and machine..

Top marks..

Now go check out my pic's...LoL

I was just going through the pictures in my gallery and read the comments regarding this picture... Then I came across 04Asphalt's little remark about how many voters were new members...

VFR FLA,
I like the picĀ but understand your confusion. I would be curious to see how many are new members and first time posters

Okay, I'm not the brightest guy in the world, and it wasn't until now that I realized that you're implying that I went out and recruited voters so that I could win? Well, I didn't. And quite frankly, I think it sucks that somebody would think that I took the contest so seriously as to rig the results.

Yes, this is old news...I realize that...but I wanna make sure I'm in good standing with the good people of VFRD.
