Brake/Clutch/Wheel Bearing Replacement Questions.

Hello VFR Owners.

 

I was lucky to pick up a 2002 VFR 800 ABS 42k mi recently and really enjoyed the ride home. Brakes felt a bit noisy. Also quite hard to push around the garage. Up on the rear stand and front stand the bike went.

 

Well - I need to rebuild the following:

 

Front and Rear brake calipers

Rebuild the master cylinders: front, front secondary [LINKED MC], and the Clutch, (rear was fine)

Fork Seals and Bushings

Possibly Wheel bearings, more inspection is needed.

Possibly Steering Stem Bearings, more inspection is needed.

 

They aren't cheap! Almost $230 for all the bearings/bushings/and rubber seals...

Wondering, do I need to service the Clutch slave also?

Are the clutch and front brake MC's the exact same size? All the eBay listings seem to have the same picture for the Front brake and the Clutch MC units. Please advise. K&L Has the following part numbers 32-1079 for front brake, 32-4142.

Would you recommend tapered (\   /) steering bearings, or the "All Balls Bearings" ([]    []) type Roller bearings? What is linked next is not as it shows.

IMHO, I'd spent my time/money on the OEM Honda parts and not buy parts from eBay.  That way I'm sure I've got the proper size seals for my bike.  And unless the caliper square seals are leaking, I'd remove the pistons to clean the ports (paying close attention to the fluid return orifice) and reassemble with the original seals.

Good point, I haven't disassembled them yet, but I assumed with it being 16 y/o rubber it would just disintegrate.

I'll look into using Honda OEM stuff for the stuff that absolutely needs replaced. No rush getting the bike torn apart, it's high 30's F (0* C) here in the Northeast!

 

 

In terms of fork oil, it seems like many here like Bel Ray 7W. I typically find most bikes are over damped and under sprung - I guess this would be the fork oil of choice?

 

 

I think the plan is as follows: 

 

Buy Clutch MC and Slave rebuild kits, buy rebuild kit for front brake MC, buy rebuild kit for front brake 2nd MC, Fork seals (& Dust) and some fork oil. Rebuild brake calipers by removing pistons and polishing.

 

 

 

I have to clean and polish the whole bike. I hope the paint can be saved. The previous owner was lazy about the paint.

Honda doesn't make bearings or seals or anything similar.  They buy them in from OEM suppliers and put them in nifty little packages with red and white labels.  And they charge for the service!

 

However, it can be a challenge to know which aftermarket parts are OEM quality and which are junk, so if you don't know, it's probably better to err on the side of Honda.

 

I would never buy an All Balls bearing kit (or a no-name eBay one) because they use the cheapest suppliers they can find.  Sure, China has ISO 9001-certified factories, but they also have plenty that are not.  The quality might be okay, but there are plenty of name brand, OEM-quality (and cheap) sources for most bearings and seals, so why take the risk with All Balls?  Most bearings and seals used on these bikes are in fact standard industrial sizes--very few are so special that only Honda stocks them.  It definitely pays to shop around.

 

I don't know where else to find fork bushings, so it's Honda-only for my bikes.  And Honda fork seals are the best by common internet acclamation.  

 

Get a Workshop Manual.  Always a good idea if you're going to be working on your own bike--and the master cylinder diameters are listed in the front of the Honda manual.

I sourced a lot of different bearings from here... http://www.123bearing.com

i was able to source different bearings from tapered steering head bearings, front wheel bearings to just about all of a 6 gen swingarm bearings for less than OEM. Only one swingarm bearing was cheaper from Honda, I don’t recall which one though. They carry SKF, Nachi, Timken, Koyo, NSK, NTN, FAG, to name a few.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not trying to be cheap, I'm just trying not to overpay for some seals and bearings :)!

 

Get a Workshop Manual. - I downloaded the one from here. Thanks. i already read the owners manual fully.

 

I think it's more the installation than the parts than the parts themselves. I know a few professional mechanics who get callbacks on forks at Kawi :)

The Honda seals can be a pain to locate, so you're just as well off to use Honda parts for them. Bearings

are common sizes and can be found at almost any bearing parts house.

Yes, I use Honda seals because trying to source their seals is really tough, the sizes just seem to be so weird. The bearings can be found nearly anywhere and are generally a little cheaper than from the local Honda shop.
