Accessory Harness for Accessories

I plan to add a switch to allow me to turn off the Stebel and just use the stock horn, I am not sure if I am going to use the included switch for the accessory lights or use another lighted one. I ordered 2 just in case. I plan to build a wire harness and get everything ready for my 600mi service and install it all then. The Stebel will be separated into the compressor and horn. I am hoping to hide the compressor behind the plastics and route a rubber hose to the horn unit. I have not decided if I will run the harness down the left side of the bike or the right. I will leave a pigtail near the engine for a future electronic cruise control. I am planning to tie the ground to the frame near the front of the bike and also run a shared dedicated ground back to the battery. I will probably leave the camera outside of the harness because I don't trust it to last as long as the wires. I will also be installing a brakelight modulator and possibly an auto chain oiler. I haven't decided on which one, I had a loobman on my last bike, but I am leaning towards one of the automatic ones.

 

I want to grab switched ignition power from the plug on the stock harness, does anybody have a link to the plug? I do have the 12V outlet under the seat so I could get it from there, but I want to reserve that to charge go pro batteries on the go.

I make up harnesses that clip into existing bikes harness. 

 

You could also piggy back onto your accessory harness connectors by making a link cable so you have a switched trigger wire for your relay. 

 

You only need to use one relay.

Do you know where to get the connector? My plan was to make a small cable to get the switched power off the little y that the 12v socket harness leaves.

 

I put 2 relays because I want to keep the horn separate. Its got a big draw and the dashcam does not handle low voltage well at all.

Thanks, I'll take a picture when I get home tonight. Its that white plug on the left side right next to the battery. The factory 12V plugs into it and leaves a pigtail with the same connector to allow additional accessories to be connected.

 

I was having a hard time figuring out the ampacity of the wire, I don't want to hit the horn and have the Dashcam malfunction, thats probably the time where I really need it :P. They are known for having issues with low voltage, and it actually has a built in 10 second delay to avoid issues when cranking the bike. Depending on where I look 10 gauge copper seems to be rated somewhere between 30 and 60 amps. My fuse holders are only 10gauge so I can't upsize the wire.

That push-on-push-off switch for the air horn is only "splash resistant".  Fine if you're a fair weather rider.  May not hold up to heavy rain storms and washing.  I would look for stuff rated at least IP65.  When you're looking around, keep an eye out for vandal proof as well as water proof.  Most vandal proof switches are also sealed well against liquids.

 

Also make sure that switch controls only the relay actuation for the Stebel and not the Stebel's feed current, unless it's rated for that current and the wiring gauge is sufficient for that use.

 

Let us know where you wind up mounting the Stebel bits!

 

Oh, and that combo voltmeter with USB charging ports looks really cool.  But I'd be a little wary of getting that too wet as well.

Yea I am worried about the water resistance, but this stuff is so cheap if it breaks I'll replace it. Im in southern California so the bike doesn't get a whole lot of water. Everything is independent of the OEM systems and all OEM systems are staying so nothing critical should stop working.

 

Those switches look sweet, I'll figure out final install positions once I have all the parts. Its hard to imagine without holding it next to where it will eventually go.

Washing can be more intrusive than rain.  Just sayin'.  The surfactants let water into places it might not normally get into.

 

E-Switch makes some nice vandal proof IP65 switches in stainless steel with ring lighting in your choice of LED color.  Available from the likes of Mouser and Digikey.  But not particularly cheap, and heavy because they're stainless not plastic.

 

I haven't tarted up my 8th Gen but for my 4th Gen, initially I got a few hard-to-find IP67 rated momentary pushbutton samples direct from a company named Apem because I needed the lowest possible profile behind the panel for my application.  But later I bought some illuminated NTE rockers from Radio Shlock.

 

There are less expensive options that look like the E-Switch stuff.  Check this out...

Yup, and thats why I want to do this right once and not end up with a rats nest of wiring. Drove me nuts on my old bike (and entirely my fault too!). With all the factory connectors I got there will be zero modification of the stock harness to cut down on possible issues.

 

I received the USB port today, its tiny! But sadly no waterproofing at all, and the rubber dust cover looks suspect. I will try to seal the top of the board to the lower case with silicone, and then fill the area around the connectors with dielectric grease. This will hopefully prolong the life if and when water gets in. Key for scale. Now I need to figure out the mounting location.

 

I also received some black stickers that reflect white. I want to put these on the back of the hardbags. Trying to decide how much of the back of the bag to cover, and if I should stick them on vertical or diagonally. I'll take some pictures and post them below.

I think I'll try to fab up a little bracket and either attach it to the radiator mouting brace or double stick it to the back of the gauge trim piece. This should keep it out of the way of the fork tubes, and on the right I dont have to worry about the throttle cables. Should keep it out of most of the weather too.

Edit:
