Member Contributer alwaysaware Posted January 27, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted January 27, 2017 They are trying to do something along the same same lines here in California. See below. (This is from the DMV website) Motorcycle Lane Splitting (AB 51, Quirk): This law defines “lane splitting” as driving a two-wheeled motorcycle between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane. The law authorizes the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to develop educational guidelines relating to lane splitting in a manner that would ensure the safety of motorcyclists, drivers, and passengers. In developing these guidelines, the law requires the CHP to consult with specified agencies and organizations that have an interest in road safety and motorcyclist behavior. Also becoming law for 2017: motorcycle lane splitting. It wasn't previously illegal, but it wasn't defined as legal either. The new law makes sure lane splitting must be done safely.CHP said it would work with motorcycle organizations to define what is and isn't proper when riding between cars."If traffic is stopped at a standstill, you can't have a motorcycle that is traveling at 50-60 mph as it's dangerous for both the motorcyclist and the vehicles around as well," Galvan explained. FairWeatherFellow
Supported! If we can get lane splitting here in WA it would be a god send. Especially with traffic as bad as it is here around the Seattle area. Can't wait to see the faces on people when I sneak by 2 miles of stopped cars ? Most people seem to misunderstand what happened with AB51. It started out defining and regulating lane splitting (making it explicitly legal when done in a certain way), but ended up doing nothing except authorising the CHP to re-develop and publish guidelines--something they had already done years ago, but without lawful authority (according to a court case). The best outcome will be that they end up with exactly the same guidelines as before, but the new guidelines could easily turn out to be worse....
