Ignition switch Clean rebuild

Turned key on this morning to go to work and nothing! Thought battery was dead but I moved the key and everything came on and engine started. Is there a known issue with ignition switch and can it be taken apart and contacts cleaned or do I need to get a new switch??  Has only happened once but I don't like surprises.

You could take a look at this article on cleaning an ignition switch for the ST1100. I'm not absolutely sure, but I would be very confident that the innards of the VFR switch are the same as the ST1100.

Cleaning the switch may or may not solve the problem long term. A new switch is about $40. I replaced one last year in my 212,000 mile ST1100.

Oh good news. Did not know you could just replace the switch portion thought it was an assembly. sounds like the easy most reliable option. Thanks for the info.
