overheating in traffic

My own opinion on this is that if there is air in there, it only takes one heat cycle to get rid of it. 

Expansion in the cooling system will expel most of it, once it cools, it will suck in extra coolant from the overflow bottle. 

Once that happens, next time it heats it will expand to a full of coolant system. 

So I dont have much faith in this legend. 

5th and 6th VFR cooling systems are bad design full stop. 

Fine for a race track, crap in traffic. But they need to be in tip top shape. 

I also think people panic about them running hot without real proof that it's a problem. 

If it's not boiling, it's not a problem. 

Switch off engine temp and look at ambient instead.

To put it in perspective, when the GPz900R came out in 84, I bought one. 

It was one of the first water cooled bikes out. 

Everyone started complaining that it ran too hot because it would run at 3/4 most times on the heat gauge. 

Kawasaki answered that if it showed 1/4 on the gauge for the same temperature, nobody would say anything. 

I know 3/4 is not the same as 98*C, but I also don't think it's a problem. 

 

At at the pressure the VFR runs, it will not boil until 124*C or there abouts. If it's not boiling, it's cooling. 

 

On an 8th gen you have better air flow and a proper radiator design, but in traffic they will also run hot, all bikes do. 

 

But it if in doubt, run your bike to normal heat with radiator cap off while on side stand, that will get rid of any bubbles. 

If it continues to overheat, take it back, something is not right.
