keny
So this week I once again got a change in my garage. Gone is the 3rd gen, that I had for about a year, in came a 1986 Honda CBX750F RC17 Its not in perfect condition, not 100% sure if I will keep it, have to see. I can get it as a classic whit low insurance costs, that if I can get it n condition to pass the test. The good: -Ok exhaust -Fair condition tank as top faring. -Good wheels as front tire -Runs ok, no rattels, no smoke. -Nice OEM seat cover -Switches in good nic The bad...... -Rear tire toasted, wrong size as a front specific tire! -Rear brake disc in need of replace, ridden whit worn out brake pads metal against metal -Fork seals leaks -side covers horrible in condition -Hugger needs a respray -tail section needs work -Carburettors might need a clean, sliders stick at moments.... So some to do, but not hopeless. Also if a keeper I like to switch to the dual headlight setup many market areas had, looks so much better I think! So as I today had a BIG clean in the garage, and all my 3 bikes was out, I just realiced I have a RWB collection

Member Contributer mello dude Posted September 11, 2016 Member Contributer Share Posted September 11, 2016 That must have been a Euro only Honda. I dont remember it being offered in the US. - I might have bought one. Very nice btw...
keny
It's not a EU only model, as it was also sold DownUnder (AUS) as South Africa. It was sold side by side whit the VF750F. This version was made from 1984-86. A version whit full fairing was sold in central EU from 1987 on for some years. Has some nice features like hydraulic adjusted valve lifters like on cars. Also alternator is on top of gearbox that makes engine slim. But yes, not sold in the US from what I know.
Member Contributer VFROZ Posted September 11, 2016 Member Contributer Share Posted September 11, 2016 All the bad things are easy to fix, finding one with an original exhaust in good condition is a miracle. From the look of the adjusters, you will also need a new chain and sprockets. The Oz model only came with the twin headlights and belly pan. Not many sold, not sure why they weren't very popular, from memory, there was some weakness to the motor. I do remember lusting after one when they first appeared, but it didn't last long, they still look good.
keny
I got a belly pan for mine to, but a fiberglass replica that needs a repaint. Can be the chain is just wrong length, as it seem OK. Have to see. The weakness is that the oil level needs to be high to not run the engine dry of oil in tight twists, hard brake.... a wheelie is a killer. The later (late 85 on) models have a shorter dipstick that´s minimum is a bit above the max on the early bikes! Reason is Honda wanted the engine low in the chassis, and the sump is then cut and the ½ liter oil is in the frame on way to oil cooler and back. Also as the oil is not drained from the frame in a oil change hurt durability. The Exhaust is a aftermarket replica, not the OEM, like on my RC24 VFR750F
steve27bha
I've had one of them for about 25 years. The exhaust went ages ago and I got a nice Sebring 4into1 that was originally for the CBSevenFiftyF2. That bike used the CBX engine and a modification of the frame so the exhaust fits exactly bar having to make up a support strap. Mine was a Japanese spec model imported to UK and I have fitted a MPH speedo, bellypan, engine bars, Givi rack etc.. Japan and most of Europe and the UK and Australia got a twin headlight version. It has done over 65,000 miles and the cam cover has never been off because of the hydraulic valves. A version was produced in Brasil for many years after it was withdrawn from other markets. There is an international owners club at teamrc17.net It is based in Australia but has many members worldwide and some excellent support info. including a couple of articles by me. Tell them stevem sent you. PS There are drain bolts for the frame oil.
keny
Nice pics steve27bha! Well got something nice in the mail the other day Aside a small mark made by the seat (lowest point) its like new! Also got the other keys to the bike in the mail yesterday, and today I did open the top case to what was in it, well a poor condition side panel and a map whit owner manuals (copy on papers) in both English as Finnish! a parts file from a 87 on F2...scans of brochures, magazine articles, but also a paper whit notes what has been done to the bike, more detailed from 2008 on but back from 2005 what the new owner 2008 did know! Seem the following owners has kept on making notes, last one from summer 2015. Then it got cylinders from a wricked bike whit 25k kms on the clock, had 116k kms then, now 120k kms on the clock. the head has been done at about 105k kms, crank machined and new bearings at 80k kms...it goes on, lots has been done! What I do would like to find still is the crome covers for the rubbers between the carbs as air filter box! I have a top faring for the twin headlights on way from Dutch ground! Thanks for helping out again Dutchy! So will be twin headlights, but now have to raise some funds for them as other parts (rear brake disc, side cover under seat right side, rear tire, some paint jobs). By the way, look at the pic I posted above, why don´t other bikes has the R/R located as good as this bike!

keny
Been a time since last update here, and not that much done, but got home some boxes since last update. Got a big box from Dutch ground, thanks for the help one more time Dutchy I only need the right side as middle part of it for adding the twin headlights. Also found a good right side under seat panel! and a good set of twin headlights! Also got a nice small box from Steve27bha ! Pics of them when mounted! Found out the twin lights use a slightly different spacing for mounting, but a thing I can owercome! More pics later!

Member Contributer Mohawk Posted October 24, 2016 Member Contributer Share Posted October 24, 2016 Nah its CB750 or 900, most race series had moved on by the time the CBX series came along. I had a CBX550F for a good number of years, it was an excellent bike, but the only bike I've owned that I can't recall where I got it from ! keny
Ha Dutchy.... I already know it got a unreliability problem....so, who knows what will hapen. But there is a good cure for the unreliability engine, a engine from a RC42, but will not pass a classic inspection whit that. Time will tell. Fow now on just hope I find time to work on this as the RC24.... A testride in the spring will tell a lot....

keny
Some fresh pictures of it together. And the picture I promised steve27bha Thanks so much for the "fake" cups behind the carb´s!!! But sadly this bikes has come to an end of a era for me. I don´t have time to work on it (fork still not rebuild), want my focus on the VFR750F to get it pass classic inspection, need some funds, and have more interest to ride outside dirt again....Its a lovely bike, but......................... So its sold today. But I´m glad to say its sold to two brothers that has enthusiast for classic bikes, and the CBX become to most modern bike they own, they have old CB750´s a s 70´s BMW´s. I think it got a good home, better than it had...................
