Recommended solutions to reduce wind noise

I don't know about the technical specs on the Bose. I do know they are amazing. I got them because our dog snores really loud and now I can sleep. If I were you I would pickup a set from best buy, you can return them if they don't perform as desired.

If you want, I will try them again this weekend at speed and report back.

That'd be cool.  Also, good idea about picking up a set to try them out.

Just curious: With this screen and at your height, where does the airflow hit you?  Nice bike BTW.

The Zero Gravity Sport Touring shield put the wind directly (but evenly) on my helmet. I no longer had the wind on my chest and buffeting around under the chin bar of my helmet. My Shoei RF-1100 was MUCH quieter in an even flow of air with the ZG - ST shield. A simple test is to use your hand/glove placed horizontally across the bottom of your helmet while riding at highway speed to see the difference in buffeting beneath your chin bar and smoother/quieter times.

Took the Bose Active noise canceling on the highway  today up to about 80mph. I was actually surprised they weren't quieter. However the sound level was near perfection for me.  A little bit of noise including some engine. I would estimate all noise levels cut by two thirds.  I found myself driving faster off the highway as well. I wish I could explain it better but it is almost like the full noise level is giving me false feedback.  With headphones I was more confident and able to ride faster through the curves. I don't like the cable but definitely worth more investigating.

BTW-i have a Givi Touring windshield

How much more quiet are they then regular earbuds?

So they affect your ability to hear engine to avoid stalling?

I have never used ear plugs.  If you're referring to ear buds like you hook up to your phone, then they are a lot more effective.  They electronically cancel outside noises through the use of microphones at each ear and computer processing. I would say they will definitely reduce your ability to hear the engine taking off and cause more stalls.  I have been riding with Harleys lately so I have learned to feel the engine to avoid stalling. My exhaust is stock but gutted and I still can't hear my bike.

Finally had the chance to get on the bike today and try my newly-adjusted MRA X-creen, along with my windjammer and a fresh set of earplugs (NRR 33).  The windjammer does make a noticeable difference at slower speeds (riding in the city, 70 km/h and below), but the effect is much less dramatic at highway speed (anywhere between 110 - 150 km/h for me).  In fact, I think the noise level is nearly the same as before, when I was just wearing a neck tube instead of the windjammer.

Anyway, the riding season is almost over here...the temperatures have dropped in the last week or two, and it's getting windier and rainier too.  Probably won't be riding much more, if at all, this year.  I guess I'll have some decisions to make during the winter:  Selling / getting something different (implies a reinvestment) ? Giving up bikes entirely?  I'll also try to book an appointment with a hearing specialist in the upcoming weeks:  If there's a way I could protect my ears better and keep my current bike, I'd prefer that, obviously.

  • 9 months later...

I noticed something interesting last night while riding. I stretched and leaned back enough to put my head above the turbulence and I couldn't believe how smooth and quiet it was. I'd assumed all the buffeting and head banging I was experiencing was just normal and something to get used to.

Problem being bugs. I'd really prefer to have them directed up and over my visor as they are a real problem on the prairies. I'm 6' and have Webike riser bars which will make the job of the windscreen more challenging. So far it looks like the MRA Vario might be the best unit.
