Member Contributer Dutchy Posted November 6, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted November 6, 2017 Terrible news of the mass shooting at a Baptist church. Sad... Staying WELL clear of the gun debate (after all, I'm "socialist Euro trash" no?). Probablly an agnostic, saddened by this drama, I looked up where baptist congregations meet near where I live and went out for a ride. To give it some thought and pay a little respect. In the old part of town In the new part of town Then rode into the great wide open... A rebel, w/o a clue....

Member Contributer Dutchy Posted November 8, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted November 8, 2017 With tre riding season coming to a close, it is time to measure the health of the charging system before putting her in hibernation. 8,000km in a season (and 6k on the VF) ain't bad at all. With the newer, higher output H7 bulbs in, I did notice my SDC LED voltage meter more often signalling that charging was low. So whip out that Fluke!! Battery with ignition off (a few degrees above zero, bike parked outside) (at 20C is should read 13.0-13.2VDC) Started the bike up and once settled (ie in 5 seconds...) with a bit of choke Let the water temp reach 70C, put (both) headlights on and I got Rev to 5k RPM and OK, I pull (and leave) the choke a smidgen to let her idel giving 14VDC RR Connector look good, give them a wee bit of KY... Put to AC and yep, there is something brewing inside the altenator. Idling, the 2 yellow wires give me the following pair reading At 5k RPM (while holding the prongs and opening the throttle I see ~65, ~70 and ~85 Vdc so different readings per pair. Over the winter I will drain oil/coolant and fit theFactoryPro evo shift star, so will pull the altenator cover to check for cripyness..... Member Contributer Dutchy Posted November 8, 2017 Author Member Contributer Share Posted November 8, 2017 Well..... Failed #3.... Only just, but a fail is a fail I did audits globally in the 90's too. It was about time I went for the "papers", now my employer of 30 years pulled the redundancy card. I would like to get back into the field, always loved the work...
Member Contributer JZH Posted November 8, 2017 Member Contributer Share Posted November 8, 2017 Why petroleum jelly? I'm not sure what effect that would have, but the manual certainly calls for dielectric (silicone) grease. I understand (the Internet told me so!) that petroleum jelly has two relative drawbacks, compared with silicone grease: petroleum jelly has a very low melting point, and it releases flammable vapour...
