Starter Gear Play Rc36

Hi guys,

New to this forum i'd like to ask you something....

I recently bought a 1990 vfr750f that has a strange sound when starting.

Engine wise its perfect and the startclutch looks fine...engages fine.....

But its like after releasing the starter button the starter spins rough....that kine of sound.

So i took it all appart and starter spins nicely when the starterbutton is pressed...no funny

Noises etc. Though it has quite some play in axlelength direction.

The gear in between the starter and the starterclutch has a lot of play on the small shaft.

The shaft is in goog condition no wear and its diameter is the same over its full length.

The gear itself looks good...no wearmarks.

Is that amount of play normal ???

hhhm perhaps I forgot an M... maxxl on the dutch forum?

but I recently dropped of some black fairing panels at a Dutch VFR owners house who had a white RC36-1 with a CBR900 front end.....

What are the odds that there are 2?:goofy:

Hi dvfr.

I've just removed my 1990 VFR starter motor also, and I noticed that there was quite a bit of end play too. Probably about 0.5mm, but I didn't measure it. I note that it is shimmed at the starter clutch end, presumably to ensure the shaft doesn't go too far towards the starter clutch. I was thinking of shimming the commutator end just to remove some of the end play. I can't see any reason not to do this.

Comments welcomed.

Hi Dutchy,

no mods here so far....except for a K&N filter and a L&w carbon muffler.

I am from the south

mobikie,

shimming it would be good.

but the thing I noticed was play on the intermediate gear in btween the starter gear and the starterclutch.

this gear has only one thick washer behind it and the axle on which it spins is hold in place by the enginecover.

there's a large amount of play between this gear and the smal axle.

it looks perfectly fine....no wearmarks etc. the gear itself looks fine too..no worn teeth or wearmarks in the axlbore.

I guess i will put it back as it is...maybe shim it.

the starter itself has a lot of back and forth movement on the gear aswell as worn teeth..

so i bought a used starter that looked a lot better and try that.
