Brake Piston Damage Gen 8

VTWindr: It might helps us if you could give us your last four of your VIN and date manufactured. Although brakes may have been made long before that.

It might be that the UK bikes were produced earlier than the US bikes, and that OEM manufacturer might have caught the defect.

Haven't seen any reports of US bikes with this problem.

Its worth considering that UK riders probably ride in poor weather conditions that would harm brake pistons made with inferior material more than US riders if for no other reason than they are forced to by their weather. This could account for the potentially lower number of premature brake piston wear reported by US riders. It would be interesting to know about brake piston wear failure instances in parts of the continent that have equal measure of inclement weather

I ride year round. It's not the frozen North with feet of snow like Canadaor Northern US but it is cold. As it's not snowbound the temptation to keep riding is there. I ive at a reasonably high altitude for the UK (250m - the snowline is generally around 200m here) so for 3-4 months we get a bit of snow, frost, ice and plenty of rain and temps from -5c to +5C for most of winter. The roads are kept clear with rocksalt to prevent the rain from freezing. I have read some local councils add molasses to make it sticky so a winter ride will often leave the bike encrusted in salt. I uce dabs of ACF50 and squirts of GT85 and will rinse the bike off at the end of the day. I then have a quick blast up and down my unsalted street to dry the brakes off (no air line here!) and the bikes lives overnight in the garage. I have actually looked after this bike better than any of my previous bikes which have probably had no more than a weekly rinse in winter and I have never had this issue before (with Tokico brakes as well) . Tokicos are fairly common and plenty of people ride through UK winters so I am hoping this is just a bad batch of piston plating. I guess we'll have a better idea next spring when thye've done another winter

I could be wrong, but according to the pictures, the damage looks to be physical breakage, not corrosion. It would require a direct inspection on the pistons to be sure, but it just doesn't look like that to me. Plus, corrosion on most metals generally takes time...like "more than a year" kind of time...to completely remove large chunks of metal. Keep us informed if Honda ever provides you with any definitive cause to the damage.

As you're OK and on the road .....still a poor show on Honda side, my experience with BMW was similarly uninspiring

The Model Year is contained within the VIN itself, specifically the 10th character.

I changed my front pads at the weekend and the pistons are damaged.  Unfortunately my bike is out of warranty now so I'll be replacing the pistons myself. Has anyone done this themselves and where is the best place to buy the parts from.  Are the pistons and seals a standard size and what size are they?

Have you tried your local dealer? There have been a few claims on 2014 bikes, show 'em this page, they might allow it. No harm in asking

Check out lings parts fiche for part numbers they may have seal sizes too

To see the part numbers you have to put the parts in the shopping cart on Lings' site. 

 

I've always thought of them as 100% MSRP, no discount.  David Silver Spares was always cheapest for Honda parts, but I'm not sure if they can order parts for "younger than 10 year old" bikes, or they just can't advertise them anymore?  Anyway, I'm usually after parts for older models, but I don't even check Lings.  I will check CMS in NL and bike-parts.fr, though.  Sometimes I'll google the part number, but most of the hits are nonsense of some flavour.

Lings want £370 for a full set of pistons and seals so that won't be happening.  I emailed Honda and they have said to visit a dealer so there's a job for the weekend.  On a positive note the damage isn't inside the seals with the new pads in so no leaking :)

Speak to a company called Poeton Abtec in Gloucester 

 

They may well be able to hone and given them the ceramic coating they do for motorcycle barrels

 

Chrome plating obviously doesn't work, assuming they're plated at all

Also try Powerhouse.uk, who refurbed two rear calipers for me last year.  Good prices, but I think new pistons are extra (only if needed).

Just like mine were . I use an independent now who gives them a good coating in red rubber grease each service and the new ones have been fine
