Turkey Day Runaway - A Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Photo Journal

Recommended Posts

When life throws you a curveball, leave the stadium.

Though you probably won’t find that on a motivational poster, sometimes a getaway is all you need.

This time I'm armed with the trio of my VFR1200, my usual orange tent (sans its notoriously leaky rain fly), and a DSLR that still won’t autofocus. I ran away for the holiday, so for a few moments you can run away too -- hopefully on company time.

As is now the custom, all captions/descriptions limited to 140 characters or less, Twitter-style, since modern attention spans are oh look, something shiny!

Let’s roll.

Most trips start at home. Sometimes they end there too, depending on what substances you’ve been abusing.

This one started very early.

16742906226_1ff3a978c2_b.jpg

Everyone loves PCH. The 7th gen VFR…not nearly as universally loved.

16581204278_c7e035fbcb_b.jpg

And on the 7th day, there was scenery. And Brian said “behold, it is good.”

This seal is definitely not the kind that killed Osama Bin Laden. It might not even be seal for all I know.

If you live in one of those places where it’s cold and snowy in the winter, you’re doing it wrong.

16581355350_69b24dfc2c_b.jpg

Randomly picked Carrizo Plain as a desolate place where I could camp in peace. Correct on both counts.

16561467077_76203e7529_b.jpg

5 miles of sand and dirt on a 620lb streetbike is Very FaR. See what I did there???

16767572591_05e7140a48_b.jpg

If you’ve read any of my other RRs, you’ll be stunned to hear I drank some Fireball and watched the sun set. I’m a creature of habit.

16768719465_1b023724c4_b.jpg

Sun set, moon risen, tripod erected. That word never makes me snicker – that would be immature.

16148786983_fb8afcdaf4_b.jpg

Even though the guys are crazy, even though the stars are blind…

If you show me your 7th gen baaby, I’ll show you miii-iiine

Shoutout to Patrice in Finance who makes everyone Wear Purple on Wednesday.

Two captions ago I inadvertently admitted that I know the lyrics to a Paris Hilton song. Hopefully this photo will distract you.

Is there a link to this photo journal?

It'll be posted here as soon as I finish each post. Probably will take about a week.

Got up early the next day. It was cold. How fun.

16148770793_55308a96de_b.jpg

I hated this road so much yesterday I decided to try it again in the dark. Genius.

16768689435_ba43f9882b_b.jpg

Walked out onto frosty Soda “Lake” for sunrise. It was 26 degrees. Did I mention it was cold?

16581111958_ba9d5d5f9f_b.jpg

Thumbs up if you’re freezing to death!

16148746003_3a4eed16f5_b.jpg

There are no marmots here. This is unacceptable.

16768662205_d79b5fe786_b.jpg

Why did I wake up so early again? Oh yeah, there it is.

16146348484_63361f6e65_b.jpg

All joking aside, Carrizo Plain National Monument is cool and empty. Go there.

16146337044_012107e096_b.jpg

Time to go. And by go I mean plug in my heated suit.

16767632441_aab5d9e128_b.jpg

I’m addicted to McDonald’s breakfast. Cardiologists everywhere are licking their chops.

16584661239_c82cab66b5_b.jpg

Pounded pavement and spent the rest of the day shredding Mulholland with a million speeding sportbikes. And this “Lotus.”

16584659219_1485f15d38_b.jpg

Then to CoCo Ichibanya for Thanksgiving dinner. Later I’ll have fun shitting up my buddy’s bathroom.

16148500394_4d4710e533_b.jpg

Went to bar in LA. ‘Hawks pummeled Niners in SF. We got drunk. Wowzers.

Day 2:

16151072483_e900fee51d_b.jpg

Still plenty more to come.

My buddy Kyle lives here. The lowercase i threw me off so I let the bike idle for about an hour before doing a huge burnout.

16583403000_4eacc3527a_b.jpg

Then it was up the Angeles Crest Hwy, which, inexplicably I’d never ridden before. It was nice. Like “Katy Perry’s tatas are nice” nice.

16767712762_b1ea975b2a_b.jpg

Having tea and looking down on LA. Come to think of it, I’ve always looked down on LA.

16581227920_01548f06d7_b.jpg

Mount Wilson. I think I had an ex-girlfriend who did that.

16767536872_afa89af9e5_b.jpg

And, speaking of exes, this is a series my former spouse wrote. I’m too cheap to buy a new mug, and too nice to terrorize her Amazon page.

16767552332_5abb7ca569_b.jpg

There may have been corners. I may have been speeding. I may like tatas.

16742695646_69a92d845c_b.jpg

Random marmot photo because I can!

16780397561_d58c77afb7_b.jpg

Mt. San Jacinto for the night. Thanks to my hillbilly neighbors, I got to hear plenty of Skynard and AC/DC. Ahhh, to be one with nature.

16581182210_d68ba68f8b_b.jpg

Either trying to stay warm or getting ready to kill some hillbillies. Maybe both.

16742680446_e19f82c0f1_b.jpg

Day 3:

16151658403_7ce45181a4_b.jpg

Still more to come.

Brian you have set the standard for these ride reports - short snappy text, heaps of gorgeous photos, marmots and maps.

Down into Palm Desert for Mickey D’s breakfast. Bye-bye footpeg feelers.

16767627071_40a05ce328_b.jpg

Fighting the urge to drop some acid or eat some shrooms. Did laugh at some weirdos filming a music video. Or a porn, I’m not sure.

16742677016_c733e605a7_b.jpg

This is a cactus. I suggest you don’t let it catch on the side of your backpack, which will tear open and your 250mm lens will fall out.

16580959378_c5d7154372_b.jpg

I swear to god I rode through JTNP and when I left, I didn’t know what a Joshua Tree looked like. I still don’t. Okay Google…

16767443262_1c83794b03_b.jpg

If they didn’t have gas in Amboy, I’d still be out there walking. This motel is, um, no longer in business.

16561240087_0337a55752_b.jpg

If you add up the max temperatures the last 3 times I rode a motorbike through here prior to this, it equals more than 350 degrees.

16582358869_37229dee8b_b.jpg

Just about cleared this guy out while definitely not going over 100mph. He stayed around to investigate.

16561229927_ebbd258116_b.jpg

If only my re-flash had removed the top speed limiter…

16767418662_ebae4ff20c_b.jpg

I went looking for a backcountry campsite. After getting stuck in the sand 3 times, I gave up. Rehab is for quitters!

16148556243_419cb9a969_b.jpg

On a whim I hustled up to Dante’s View for sunset. There was a view, but I dunno who Dante is.

16146161274_1ba7df27f3_b.jpg

Proof of view.

16767385012_5f224609f0_b.jpg

Furnace Creek for the night. Could’ve made do with an actual furnace.

If you wake up at 4am, you'll be tired. With that kind of wisdom, I'm basically Confucius.

16742549386_eeeb913134_b.jpg

Set tripod, grab wireless remote, have tea. Enjoy the silence and the scenery. Still tired.

16581027430_07855df0a3_b.jpg

I would never take Artist's Drive during the day. But at 7am it's quite nice.

16767332502_b73de6f39b_b.jpg

This is Artist's Palette. Much better than Artist's Pallet, which is where you load paintings for shipping.

16580958270_7999e01174_b.jpg

Photography is not art. Still tired.

16582233939_ee06e6ddf6_b.jpg

I'm sure this is caused by like, rocks and minerals and geology and stuff. Yawn.

16580725738_36e69d01c8_b.jpg

Artist's Drive is one lane, one way, and all awesome. Don't crash, but do run it twice before anyone else shows up.

16616045258_3327664732_b.jpg

Finally warming up, so down the road I go.

16742513326_66a8d2fed0_b.jpg

Homeward Bound (The Incredible Journey). I think I saw that movie when I was about 9.

16580865100_d5de797ced_b.jpg

Oh damn, I guess we really do have a drought.

16742386456_34c38449ea_b.jpg

And that's what we refer to as "a wrap."

16582104389_98d4307881_b.jpg

Up I-5. Five hours of lane splitting in the rain. Home at 10pm. Still tired.

Deuces.

16584406010_7696aae3dd_b.jpg

No birds, no stuffing

Plus I always hated yams.

My way to give thanks.

Like the night&stars shots

What settings do you use (aperture, ISO, seconds opening)?

Hey Dutchy, all the ones here were shot at 30 seconds, ISO800 (because of the moon lighting up the landscape, without that I'd probably use 1600 with long exposure noise reduction), and f/4 because that's as wide as my cheapo 18-55 lens goes.

Nice pic's Bro... Don't know how I missed this one... I guess my friend never told me that he went on a short trip... :goofy:

haha well, it was impromptu, to say the least. Came up with the idea and left 48 hours later. I'm always on standby.

Wonderful shots, Brian - each photo tells its own story. Although I love my 800, your shots of your bike caught it from every good angle; and it hit me that time has really been good to VFR1200. Thanks a bunch!

You're welcome, glad you enjoyed. And congrats on your new 800...every time I see the one at my local dealer I think about a trade-in...

Very Fun Reading!!!! sorry- i know - cheesy........ .

It would be amazing to see your photography in action at the TMAC event....... ask Baileyrock to free up some funding and have him bring you in for the event. He might even have gas money for you !! You might even find a Marmot or two...... or a hillbilly - same diff.

Awesome RR's and thanks for sharing them.

Haha cheesy is ever-present here in wine country.

I tried to swing a work trip that would've allowed me to go to drop by TMAC (my only dragon run was on a 1984 GL1200 lol), but I couldn't make it work.

No way I would object to being brought out there though...I like your thinking. And I like shooting hillbillies!
