Member Contributer VFRbeliever Posted June 17, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted June 17, 2007 At the Overlook.JPG I want to thank the guys at NewEnglandRiders.com for an AWESOME 170 mile route. The road selection was perfect -- lots of great views, very little traffic, very little LEO presence, and some great, tight, technical turns. I had hoped for a little better turnout from the VFRD members, but with only four of us showing up (three members) we had a great day. Dan (on the GSXR) and I met at 7:30 in Methuen, picked up Tom (Twox48) in Leominster at 8:30 and met up with Mike (mickdcsw) in Orange at 9:00. We waited around for a bit to see if anyone else would show and took off around 9:30. The Meet.JPG The first half of the day was absolutely spectacular. Sunshine, 75 degrees, awesome scenery, and perfect roads. I wish I had a videocam hooked up to the bike. Route 116 between Deerfield and Conway was especially thrilling. With the brand new pavement we were able to keep a nice spirited pace throughout the entire segment. We almost got creamed by an old diesel Volkswagen Rabbit that pulled out in front of us as we were leaned hard in a fast, tight, right-hander. We took a break around 11:00 at a lake (no idea what town or what lake). Taking a Break 2.JPG Tom & Mike.JPG Twins.JPG VFR at the Lake.JPG We continued on to the Route 2 Overlook in North Adams. This is one of the most beautiful spots in Massachusetts. We had planned to eat at the Golden Eagle restaurant for lunch, but it was not open when we rolled in just before noon. Here are a few shots from the parking lot at the overlook. Parked at the Overlook.JPG Rt. 2 Overlook.JPG Triplets.JPG We headed down into North Adams for lunch at Steeples (at the Holiday Inn). Great little restaurant and very reasonably priced! Stop to Eat.JPG At the Restaurant.JPG Tom had to head home after lunch so the three of us continued on the planned route. Just as we entered VT, the heavens opened and it began to rain. The rain pretty much held on for the rest of the day in varying degrees which put a bit of a damper on the second half of the day. At one point the local law enforcement had the road blocked for an accident or flood or something and detoured us up a very muddy dirt road with a lot of ruts -- not so fun! We were looking forward to hitting that section of 116 again on the way back to the end but the rain was too heavy and steady to really enjoy it. Mike said goodbye in Deerfield and Dan & I road the last 100 miles back to the Methuen area for a total of 340 miles. Thanks Dan, Tom & Mike for a great ride! Looking forward to planning some more NE rides and meeting more of you! ~Chris

Member Contributer y2kvfr Posted June 19, 2007 Member Contributer Share Posted June 19, 2007 I think that's Plainfield Pond in West Hawley, it was on rt 116 right? Steeples does a decent Sunday brunch too. You guys were 1.5 miles from my house there. I wish I could have gotten away from the house remodel!
