Possible Routes

For some route ideas please see – http://www.superfunkomatic.com/2008-kooten...tenanny/routes/

Hotel Suggestions
Hotel Advance Booking - Group Rates

Primary Hotel - The New Grand Hotel
We have a block of 20 Rooms blocked for August 15 & 16, 2008 (thanx for the help Rich Cuming!) Anyone reserving at the New Grand for the meet should quote they are a member of the “VFR Riders”.

The rooms blocked are as follows:
  • 4 Double Rooms - $95.00/night
  • 10 Standard Single Rooms - $85.00/night
  • 3 Economy Rooms – these rooms tend to be noisier than the other rooms until about 1:00AM, but are cheaper - $80-90.00/night
  • 3 Hostel Rooms with private bath and one bed - $45.00/night

The block of reservations is held under the name “VFR Riders” and the reservations will be held for our group until May 15th. After May 15th the reduced rate will still be offered, but it is based on room availability. If any one wants to impress their “significant other” their suite is also discounted but not reserved. Advice - book soon, this is a busy time in Nelson, BC.

Rooms are all air conditioned and they provide off street parking, first come first served until their lot is full (video surveillance and it's by the exit to the kitchen, so staff are always around the bikes).

Secondary Hotel - The Hume Hotel
  • standard room with two queen beds will be $119.00 + taxes per room, per night including complimentary, full, hot breakfast each morning of your stay

the Hume is a historic building, and as such doesn't have air conditioning. it can be warm in Nelson in August so depending on your interest in staying in a historic building and tolerance for heat this may or may not be for you. it is a fantastic hotel, great service and friendly staff. they also have a pub in the main floor, which i've been to, and it is a great hangout.

About Nelson, BC

Nelson, BC has some of Canada's best roads, fantastic climate and friendliest people. it's basically halfway between Calgary (where i live) and Vancouver, BC. there are lots of accommodations and some great little restaurants, and the town is nestled right in the centre of the rockies - beautiful surroundings.

Show Your Interest/Intent to Attend
if you're interested, reply to the thread, and/or send a message to superfunkomatic@shaw.ca and i'll start creating a list of members interested.

i'd especially like to welcome all those from the previous two PNW VFRD meets and i'd really like to see some you folks from eastern canada and the US to come out and join us for the event.

so far the VFR meets i've been to have been a blast, so i'm hoping to return the favour this summer and show you all around the beautiful surroundings of British Columbia, and Alberta for those heading back east after the meet.

thanx
mike

right now i'd like to gauge interest in a 2008 VFRD meet in Nelson, BC. tentatively, i'd like to hold the meet the third week in july. i'm starting early to make sure there will be enough interest from western canada and the US to begin organizing the details. i'll have the assistance of Didit (tony) in setting the event up.

Mike,

I'm definitely interested in a meet. I agree the Nelson / Kaslo/ Slocan Valley / New Denver area is superb riding.

Given my druthers though, I would prefer late June or early September. Late July collects tons of tourists, motor homes and the like. The weather is almost as good in June or September, but, regardless of timing I'm already starting to plan.

Yes, I too will be in. There are so many options and ideas. The only thing I wonder is changing the dates from July to Aug.
We have a whole lota time to organize.

sounds good rich.
dates and times will be the biggest thing. i'll take everyone's suggestions into account.
i was there last year on a wednesday to saturday in july and the roads were pretty clear, so maybe we'll have a gathering from thursday to sunday or something.

I am in. I know the area well - so many good roads, so little time. From my experience, traffic will be the same in July or August - the weather may be a little better in August. If there is enough demand, I am sure Stephane and I would be able to lead a group from Vancouver to Nelson. I may even have a VFR by then.

Some info on this site - prepare to drool:

Mike, I think we should discuss this over a beer - later this week! See you on Thursday in Yak-city.

I'm in depending on the dates, I'm hoping to ride down to the MotoGP at Laguna next year and that's usually the third weekend in July isn't it. So early July or any other time basically would work.

But yeah that area has some of the best riding in Canada if not further afield.

That is the weekend of the motogp. would love to go but will probably go to the races. I will watch to see if date changes. I have been wanting to make it up that way for years, hope the date does change! Take care.

Oops - I will hopefully be working at MotoGP @ Laguna next year (fingers crossed), so any time other than MotoGP weekend would be ideal.

This may require a poll...

If I can figure a way to get my bike out west without selling one of the children, I'll try to make it. I suspect Calgary is the destination I should start looking into?

As far as dates are concerns, I would prefer August as I might teach in July next year, and we can't get subs in the summer.

And yes Tony, we can lead a group from here! (hopefully it's not a race weekend)

I'm in for sure, as long as it doesn't fall in the middle of July. Already committed to a family wedding about midway through the month (18th weekend, I think) Thanks for starting this early; it often makes the difference between things working out (or not), as I have to pick my summer vacation time usually quite far in advance. beer, um, yes. we'll have beer and plenty of it. as long as you don't mind us pulling it out from the igloo. haha.

i'll take motogp into account guys. i'm sure i can figure a date that we can all make it. would want anyone to miss riding a motorcycle, instead of sitting in bleachers watching someone else ride a motorcycle. :)

shouldn't be a problem.

I would be in also. I would hope we could make the date definite for those of us that need to book holidays well in advance.

Superfunk just came through on the way to PNWIII, with Tyke & CVVFR. I almost cried when they drove away without me.
Dam this cursed internal ethic. Dam it all to hell.

Mike & I breifly spoke and will planning a planning meeting to put down some date options (obvious the first thing to consider).
From there we can book routes, hotels, eating arrangements and the like.
Had some thoughts as promoting a 'VFR Rally' day in local media, bring on some sponsors and the like, then wave bye bye the next day
as we tour around the Central Interior (Kootenays / Okanagan / Similkameen).

More to come and yes, you American compadres, there will be beer. Canadian Beer!
Have a Vision. Keep the Faith. Believe until it becomes Real.
I'm not lost, I'm just checking every possible route.

thanx again tony for the hospitality.
just rode through the central interior yesterday, all 950+ kilometres. all i can say is wow.
some of the rides of done in the past, but i'll tell you next summer is going to kick serious hiney!
stay tuned for details...
tony and i will have something together and finalized by mid-september so everyone can plan their summer vacations and such.

thanx for the great initial response, sounds like there is a lot of interest in a meet in the area.

Beer, O Joyous Beer.

I shall dream of Canadian Twisties followed by copious amounts of Canadian Beer and it will carry me through the long wet winter.

My passport's good and I'm ready for the road.

Cheers,
-T

PS, We're gonna miss ya this year Didit :(

Sounds fun. A few us from Lethbridge would definitely be interested!

Maybe it will turn into the replacement for Sportbikewest???

Yes, but will there be beer at your house the middle of next week?? The t-shirt delivery express is coming to save you!

The bike was packed heavy this morning, I felt like I needed to call the tower for a runway clearance.

PS - while you're sitting around this weekend, do a sun-dance for us. We're facing the threat of rain here tomorrow, but then this is the Pacific North-wet.
