Motorcycle Rally

During the beginning of March 2013 I decided to enter the annual Western Cape Motorcycle Endurance Rally. The organizers send you a list of checkpoints (18 printed pages). You then choose which checkpoints to visit. Each checkpoint gives you a certain amount of points. A photo has to be taken at each checkpoint to prove you were there. Essentially you then choose your own route. There is a start point where everyone meets and then everyone goes their own way. The event runs for 8 hours and then everyone has to be at the last checkpoint to hand in their scorecards. I did a total of 650km and ended 9th out of 19 bikes. My VFR even did a stretch of dirt road of about 90 kms without a problem!

Fitting power supply

I decided to install a power supply on my VFR due to the fact that I already fitted a bracket for my GPS but had no way of charging it. I bought a cheap fitting meant for a car with a waterproof cap. Fitted on the right side of the "dash" it works 100%. The whole job cost ZAR39,00

Afternoon ride to Stellenbosch

I went for a very pleasant ride out towards Stellenbosch from Cape Town. In stellenbosch we went onto the Hellshoogte Pass. Very popular with bikers with long wide sweeping curves! Thereafter we went through Pniel, Paarl and home via Durbanville. Total distance about 150kms.

Ride out to Hermanus

I didn't get much time off during the festive season this year (non at all actually) so I had to wait for a public holiday to take my VFR out for a nice ride! December 27 I took my baby out from Cape Town, through Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els to the beautiful town of Hermanus to see some family. My wife followed in the car and failed miserably trying to keep up! Shame. The road between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els is one of the most scenic coastal mountain rides in the Western Cape and there are LOTS of corners and long sweeps to get your knee down. It stretches all along the coast with the ocean on one side and the mountain on the other side for about 30 km. Absolute bliss! Sorry I didn't take too many pics as I was having too much fun and had to force myself to stop every now and then for a photo. A great day indeed!

Although not a Honda or VFR event, the 2010 Ink and Iron custom bike show held in Cape Town, South Africa was a blast! There were all sorts of American choppers, Harley Davidsons and custom bikes to be seen. All in all an awesome event and a pleasure to attend. Check out some pics in my albums under "Ink and Iron 2010".

The pictures I took is at a place called Blaauwberg Beach overlooking table bay towards Cape Town. Just to the west on the horizon lies Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was jailed for 26 years. Robben Island can be seen as the sun sets with my trusty VFR in the foreground!

IMGP0091.JPG

IMGP0090.JPG

IMGP0089.JPG

IMGP0088.JPG

IMGP0085.JPG

IMGP0084.JPG

I went on a short drive to Table View, across the bay from Cape Town City. It's a very popular beach and it was packed! A friend of mine runs a icecream truck and sells icecream over weekends.
Couldn't let a beautiful sunshine day go by without a ride out in the countryside. This photo was taken less than 5 minutes from my home. You can see Table Mountain in the background. I live in the northern suburbs of Cape Town on the edge of the Durbanville Wine Route and further north is virtually only farming area. Lots of nice scenery and twisty roads. Very lucky i know! If i travel South i will be in Cape Town City in about 15 minutes. The best of both worlds.

When i bought my bike it had an aftermarket Scorpion exhaust fitted. There was no heat shield for the rider's right foot. I was unable to find one on the internet. Unfortunately Scorpion is no longer imported into South Africa. I then asked my son-in-law who is an engineer to make me one on a CNC machine. He did and it turned out very smart.
My friend who lives in the Bahamas came for a visit in mid July and we went for a ride out to Wellington, Malmesbury and Darling around the beautiful Western Cape farmland area. Truly the most amazing scenery! Cape Town South Africa has some of the most beautiful roads in the country.
